    Hey Guys,

    Kaz Here,

After lurking here for the past couple of months I finally decided to take action, make an account, and start my own journey.

This journey will involve my attempt to earn a living through 2 different ways - an Amazon Affiliate website and content writing.

I decided to start with Amazon because there is a lot of information about affiliate marketing available online, Amazon itself is a popular and trustworthy company, and the relevant journeys here have been pretty interesting to me.

I'm taking the first steps of this journey tonight. I will be browsing Amazon for potential products to base my website around and I plan to get hosting and register a domain by tonight.

The next step will be setting up the site which I don't have any experience in and then adding content. I'm planning on starting with 1 general article and 5 reviews.

I've taken a bunch of notes from the journeys here and from what I've read online and I have a good idea of the first few steps I need to take. Anything beyond that I will have to research online to figure out.

The second part of my journey, which is actually the part I hope to earn from first, is creating content for online customers. I don't have a background in writing but English is my first language and I wrote a lot of essays in university.

I will be creating profiles on Fiverr and other similar websites where I can offer my skills. I need to do some more research on similar websites though and will be completing that tonight.

My goal is to be earning this amount 1 year from today. With hard work and dedication I know it's possible to reach this goal and learn a whole lot along the way.

    Well, here we go!

Would you be building 1 authority amazon website or many different amazon websites targeting specific niches?

Good Luck with your journey though :)

I'm starting with a website targeting a specific niche. I'm not sure if I want to go the niche site route or the authority site route.

    Day 1

I decided that even though I started last night that today is going to count as Day 1 of my journey.

    Amazon Affiliate

As I mentioned in my first post I spent some time browsing Amazon for products. When I found products I had an interest in and felt I could write content for I made sure to note the product in an excel spreadsheet.

After compiling a list of potential products for my affiliate site I did some light keyword research to determine which of them were even worth trying to rank for. What I did was look up the product and different keywords in Google and in the Google Keyword Tool. If the product had an ideal amount of monthly searches I would check the top sites in the Google search. If it seemed I could rank for the product and other buying keywords I kept it and if not I deleted it.

In the end I found a few products that I believe I could rank an affiliate site for. For now I have decided on one product that is the most interesting to me and which will be the first website I create.

I'm new to creating a website and I had to start from scratch. I purchased a domain which was "product + review". The word "reviews" actually had less monthly searches. I did some research and went with Hostgator as my host. I had to point nameservers or whatever but I finally managed to get everything working and I uploaded Wordpress as the site content manager.

After browsing some YouTube videos to see how Wordpress works I arranged all the pages on the site to be relevant to my needs. I wrote 1 general post (700 words) and posted it to the site. I'm not sure if I will follow the blog format or static front page format. I also have to do some SEO research since I'm not that familiar with keyword density or ideal article structure or anything related to on-page SEO.

I added some plugins and chose a better, more basic, theme. It's a free theme for now but I might move on to a paid theme once I figure out how that works. I created an About Me, Privacy Policy, and Disclaimer page. I also created relevant categories and made sure to fill in all the text boxes with content.

I'm going to write 5 reviews and 3 general articles and post them to the site every other day probably. I also have read about "backlinking" but I have no idea what any of it is so I will have to do some research for that.

    Content Writing

I made accounts today with Fiverr, Elance, Odesk, and a few other random ones I found. I updated the profiles and made sure that people could find me if they needed content written. I've never written anything for anyone before so it's going to be interesting how this turns out.

    Conclusion

That's all I got done today. Tomorrow I will be writing more content for my affiliate site. I will also browse the content websites and look or work. Above all else I will be doing a ton of research into how I can move forward as effectively as possible.

Thanks Deadjoe. I downloaded that plugin and used it for my posts already. The Nick Flame article was good also and gave me a ton of extra pointers.

I personally prefer the Platinum SEO Pack plugin but either will do just fine.

Here's an update on what I've done since my last post.

    Amazon Affiliate

I wrote a bunch of reviews and another general content article and I'm drip feeding them to the site every other day. So far I have 3 posts on the site and over 2k words.

I read up on how to optimize Wordpress and content and I applied what I learned. There are some great plugins available on Wordpress that really help out when it comes to SEO.

I spent some time learning more about how to build backlinks and I'm going to follow a guide I found here. I'm going to start with Web 2.0s and I'm going to make accounts on all the social media sites.

I applied for Adsense and got accepted. I added an Adsense block to the page but I haven't added any affiliate links so far. I'm going to wait for the site to rank higher first before adding any affiliate links.

It doesn't appear that my site has gotten any traffic yet but all the pages are indexed. The site is brand new and I don't expect any significant traffic for a while.

    Content Writing

I did not put much effort into pursuing any leads for content writing. I made 3 gigs on Fiverr but I didn't apply to anything on any other sites.

I did find a job on CL which pays $1/100 words and they hire everyone. From looking on Google this doesn't seem like a great rate but for a beginner it's better than nothing.

I wrote 2 articles for them and they paid me immediately through Paypal. This is pretty awesome since it's the first money I've ever earned online!!

They're also pretty good because they claim to have unlimited content that needs to be written and that I can work as much as possible. I'm not in any danger of starving but for now I can do the 2 articles in 30 minutes and earn $10 USD per day. I think that's a good start.

    Conclusion

I'm still learning everything as I move forward. It seems like I've learned a lot in just the past couple of days but it does not seem like i have accomplished much. I'm still very excited with this project.

I've been using Serpbook to track my website rankings for the keywords I am targeting. Here are the rankings so far after just 3 days.

Today I got quite a bit of work done and spent a few hours doing research also.

    Amazon Affiliate

The biggest thing I spent time on today was building Web 2.0s. I made sites/pages for weebly, blogger, yola, webs, tumblr, and Facebook. I haven't added any links to my main site from them but I added enough content to all of them so something new is uploaded every 3 days. On the social media sites I will have to post manually for now.

I haven't done this yet but tonight I will be browsing relevant blogs/forums and leaving comments. I'm also going to create a Youtube channel and make a quick but relevant video to link back to my site.

I checked the backlinks that my competitors had on Google and made a note of them. I will visit the back link sites and try to get my own links or at least learn more about the strategy my competitors use.

I got some of the first traffic today. I hardly clicked on the site but Wordpress site stats and analytics both say I got some traffic so that's a good sign to me. I don't have any affiliate links on the site but as soon as i notice traffic picking up I will add them.

I'm going to make a table tonight using one of the Wordpress plugins I found and upload it to the site in a few days.

    Content Writing

I did not put much effort into pursuing this today.

I did, however, complete 2 articles for the CL job I found and they paid me another $10. Easy money for the effort and it makes me feel better than if I didn't earn anything at all.

    Conclusion

Working hard. Too soon to see any results.

I found this interesting image earlier reading up on article/content SEO guidelines.

It's the results of a QuickSprout study that shows content that is more than 2000 words is much better and more effective when it comes to ranking than content that's only 500 words. This is the average word count of Google-favoured blogs.

Kaz my man, even though you are barely beginning... you already have a strong sense of where you need to be. Continue to chip away at your goals, and in no time, you'll be making quadruple what your original goal was.

    Cheers to your success!

Quick question about building backlinks, specifically web 2.0s like weebly, yola, etc.

How long after building out the web 2.0s should you link back to your original site? 3 days? 1 week? What's an appropriate time period that doesn't look too shady? Or can you start direct linking back right away?

What i've done today so far is become familiar with Google Webmaster Tools. I thought I had added analytics to the site correctly but there was no data being reported so I had to figure that out. I browsed all the different channels and settings available and there is a ton of free info provided by Google. There was a complete list of my page rankings and the keywords i'm ranking for. It was pretty neat and really helped point me in the right direction of how I want to build the site. I even used the Crawler Fetch tool and it indexed my newest post in less than a minute after posting.

Right now I'm going to spend some time beefing up all the Web 2.0s and looking for more that I can use for backlinks. I'm also going to browse reddit and other online forums and add some relevant blog posts there.

    Amazon Affiliate

Today I spent a lot of time on Web 2.0s. I made 11 different ones but I haven't added any links back to my affiliate site. I'm going to wait a little while before doing that and let the Web 2.0s rank on their own. Each of them has quite a bit of content, at least 1k words in total each, images, and videos.

After spending some more time on Google Webmaster Tools and browsing Analytics I have a clear grasp on how things work. I don't know if I mentioned it already but I have added AdSense to the site for now. I haven't added affiliate links yet but I will do so in a few days/weeks. Both Analytics and the WP Site Stats show I'm getting traffic and today I got 9 unique views all from search engines (7 from bing 2 from google). No ad clicks though.

I'm going to write some content for it tonight. Maybe a review or a short guide, I'm not sure yet.

    Content Writing

I did not put much effort pursuing any earnings with this method today. I made another Fiverr gig and even though I haven't had any orders yet I have over 500 views across my 4 gigs.

I did 2 articles for the CL guy and he sent me another $10. They were both articles on the health niche was pretty easy for me to write about.
