    pretty good

this is the EXACT REASON why i left design

ONE - Depreciation sets in. The human mind is programmed to depreciate aesthetic beauty, the more it looks at it. So your client will see a beautiful website the first week the new design is done. But every time he looks at it, his neurons are literally changing. They are depreciating its beauty.

Why do you think rich men buy a fleet of new cars? The horrors of depreciation.
Why do you think we're all not camped out at the Grand Canyon, just staring at it? Depreciation. If the brain didn't depreciate beauty, we would never get anything done. We would just stare at the Grand Canyon or the same supermodel pic all day. The brain gives you a spike of pleasure initially. But is programmed to make this spike fade - in order to keep us productive.

That's why i've leaned to HIT THEM WITH THE INVOICE the second they see the new website.

TWO - You have to deal with people who are not artists nor seo guys. They don't know how to DESCRIBE the changes they want. They just know "SOMETHING DOESNT LOOK RIGHT." Again, it's not their fault. They are not trained to provide artistic commentary, hence, they CAN'T provide artistic commentary. It can lead to a frustrating conversation.

THREE - Because clients dont know anything about design, nor the internet, they don't know who to trust. Again, its not their fault. The internet is confusing and aesthetic design is an exceptionally ethereal concept. Hence, they start asking their friends and family to comment on the website. BUT, their friends and family don't know anything about design either! Again not their fault, they were asked for an opinion and so they gave one.

In the end, this cartoon is a pretty good outline of the crap designers go through.

    Design
    Awestruck appreciation
    Depreciation
    A few changes
    A hundred changes more
Then you get paid and you do the math
Hourly wage = a little less than a McDonalds employee.

    STICK TO MMO PEOPLE

    Work for yourself

    That's what i'm doing lately

    I've seen the light.

It's so real, so many freelance graphic designers have to afford this.

I know how it feels.. used to design logos some time ago.. don't do it anymore just because of that. Clients can drive you crazy...

lol funny shit. But on the real I contacted 3 ppl to do redue my landing page and they came back with some bullshit i couldve done with paint. I told them to fuck off and ended up designing it myself which turned out real good.

You want something done right in life do it yourself i guess.

I totally agree with Tony. Clients can be hell. One of my most defining moment was when I started saying "No" to stupid requests. I used to refer to them as stupid requests till my boss suggested I find a less blunt word.

I then got management speak, and would say that "The suggestion would lead to a sub optimal solution". lol

At some point though, just walk away from the client. Tell them you appreciate their business, but that you will not have your name attached to that abomination and monstrosity with their pet kittens and rabbits.

Works wonders. You might lose some clients, but those who remain will appreciate you more.

zenerchi. The problem is that everyone thinks they can whip together a web template. I mean, how hard can it be? Throw in the zillions of idiots who think they can do it offering their services for peanuts, and you have a disaster.

At least in this instance you were wise enough to know rubbish design and tell the designers to bugger off. Many clients don't, and get what they pay for.

That said, more expensive != better. You can get good services (including design) on the cheap if you know where and how to look.

Thanks for that - laughed my ass off. It wouldn't be funny if it weren't true.

In fact, it makes me think that I should print it off and give it to 'creative' clients.

I get the idea that small business owners and startups like to have a hand in everything in their business because they see it as their baby, but time and time again creative skill is mistaken for technical ability and software knowledge.

Great design can have an explosive effect, so why let a 12 year old with a box of matches try to build a hydrogen bomb?

My best tip for off-line business: always hire people who are better than you, and then let them do what they are best at.

lol. I've had my share of strangeness from clients when I did web design locally.

I can't stand having the client sit behind me staring at the computer nitpicking at everything I do. Once I created this really cool web 2.0 style product page and my client sat behind me and requested large red bold text everywhere, retarded javascript widgets that served no real purpose other than to bloat the page, and excessive generic stock photos of generic corporate women. I specifically added whitespace at various places for usability purposes, but he referred to it as "empty real estate" and made me fill it with text and more generic images. The page ended up looking like a newspaper.

He was fat and balding and disgusting. Just like the guy in the comic lol.

LOL!! That just made the rest of my day. The last website template and logo I did.. I spent probably close to 2-3 hours to make it what they wanted. Once I show the guy, he doesn't like it and says "for god sakes.. i want it to be web 2.0.. forget it ill do it myself". All I used was WEB 2.0 FOR GOD SAKES FCKER!

Anyways.. He just wanted the logo, but he didn't like mine. But this other guy takes my exact logo (YES MY EXACT LOGO) and cuts it in half, adds a keyboard instead of the other half, and wow.. He gets $100 and I'm like "WTF THAT LOOKS LIKE SHIT!"

So I quit. The most beautiful template I have ever made and they don't like it. So I have turned my head a different direction and make me short bursts of money because I get lazy... lol

And props to all of you graphic designers who actually make some decent cash doing this!

That's why I am not a designer either.

I hate it, it's so difficult to understand what a client wants or to explain to them what can be achieved, especially on a limited budget!!!
