I hear conflicting info about this, most seem to say hosting country doesn't matter when trying to rank high in G for US terms... as long as uptime and speeds are good, you're good. But others say offshore makes it harder to rank.

What's been you're experience, or opinion on this?

There are huge masses of misinformation that float around the internet about whether this or that affects SERPS. Nobody is going to be able to give you a 100% definitive answer to this, but why would hosting your site in another country affect your serps in another? People buy a whole range of hosting packages nowadays and half of them don't even know where their site is really being hosted..

The only exception I know of is geo targeted domain extensions ranking higher in their home country. For example, .co.uk ranking higher in the UK, .com.au ranking higher in Australia, etc..

I know since Caffeine, G takes into account load times.... could it just be that servers from further away take longer to load, and that has a small effect? But even that seems incremental.

I wonder if G has some blacklist of shady Russian servers somewhere, we know they try to keep track of these things.

Are you basing this on factual data?

i personally had a site hosted in the UK, and for months(even when i was link building getting links from sites hosted in the USA) i didnt get any decent rankings from google USA; they were mostly from the UK even after i had moved my hosting to the use. therefore i suggest getting hosting in the country you want to rank in.
