Interesting read by Matt Cutts...and he was quite decisive as well. Guest blogging might now be considered black hat depending on the way you use it. It's no longer deemed a recommendable white hat technique.

If you were thinking about going fully white hat, and you are planning to use guest blogging as part of your strategy, you better reconsider.

I am pretty sure that this will be only manual penalties going forth.

Ya, good luck with this one.

I'd like to see how Google plans to penalize a site that is linked to from a contextually relevant and well written article while still allowing certain sites to get away with it.

TL;DR: We might not like relevant links in relevant content, but I can't say for sure because we haven't figured out an algorithm yet.

Perhaps they will start using the presence of guest post links to judge link profiles during manual penalties.

I never read Matt Cutt's blog but I read this article and actually commented on it.

    It's a strange post.

Sure some people abuse guest posts and any blogs set up just to be content farms that accept nothing but guest posts for SEO purposes should maybe be penalized.

But how can they punish a blogger for linking to another authority blogger in the niche or allowing someone else to write for their site.

Also Google's whole algorithm is built on having high quality and relevant links pointing at your site and now they are telling you that you'll be penalized for having those types of links if Google determines the links came from a 'guest post'.

    I'm not sure what's funnier.
Matt Cutts, or people taking him serious.
I will retract my statement if anyone can tell me how this would work on a large scale.

Have fun finding guest posts Matt.

Not surprised as Google is a listed Company. The strategy for them going forward is to force more Companies to go for paid advertising in order to get ranked. Organic searches are going to be geared towards information site. Any site that sell will be forced to rank much lower in organic searches unless they are paying for Adwords. Remember a listed Company role is to generate profit for the shareholders.

Anything legit can be abused. I think one day Google will run out of things to penalize and the only thing left appearing on the first page for every keyword is AdSense Ads, Amazon, YouTube, Yahoo Answers, and Wikipedia.

    Yup, you're right.
And Google doesn't care, because half that list is owned by Google and the other half are in each-others Roledex.
This will also be Google's downfall I believe.

I believe the future lays in a DE-centralized search engine...

Interesting project is called YaCy (Peer to Peer search engine) : http://yacy.net/en/index.html

The YaCy peers create individual search indexes and rankings, so that results better match what users are looking for over time.

    Time will tell...

What tallied with Google's webmaster guidelines yesterday can occasion a penalty tomorrow. That's why all SEOs (serious SEOs) mist be willing to adapt to changes at any time. That's also the reason why it's so difficult building white hat authority sites. Since I started IM, I've never built a white hat site. It's always been churn and burn and I intend to keep it that way. But a really good strategy you can employ in your business if you are like me is having a few white hat sites built alongside the many churn and burn sites you may have. I'm going to start doing this soon.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Google Authorship pushed more as a way to legitimize guest posts.

yes but authorship will be in the hands of the 'community' too :) so you're just turning PR sellers into G authorship sellers...

Haha, I love these "the death of" posts. Think about it: if it's soooo bad and Google is sooo prepared to catch us all at it, why the public service announcement? Well, if it removes some rookies from the game, it's a win win.

it's only for that. if you think that google only take us (seo'ers, bh'ers etc) under consideration you're wrong. 90% of the web don't have a fucking clue what's link building or how to use no follow tag. my friend fucking think that every one that visit my site = instant $$$.
google knows that, and they keep on herding the sheep.

in short - that's bullshit and they can't use it as a part of their algo. manual is something else but that always been this way.

I believe this guest blogging thing got out of Google's control, like many other things, and MC wants to scare us, typical.
