There are plenty of miss conceptions regarding keyword research. And in the end,you end up in a mess, realizing the keyword you are working on is either not profitable or too hard to rank.First, have a look at the image to get an Idea-

The competition bar is not about serp competition. Its adwords competition and has nothing to do with serp.Higher that competition bar, better for you!Trust me!You'll get more CTR.Coz the competition is high.

To analyze competition,I personally use Market Samurai. But you can do this with a free version of Traffic Travis also.Have a look at the screenshot for the same keyword "Facebook" and compare the results of adwords tool and MS.

Now what will you say?Is it easy to rank for facebook?More the "Red" columns, more is the difficulty. There is practically no tools which can tell you whether you can rank for a keyword or not.Its YOU who can tell.Have a look at the top 10 analyzed websites. If you think you can beat those numbers then go ahead. But remember, prefer QUALITY over QUANTITY for backlinks.10 high PR backlinks carries more value than 100 shitty backlinks.
.edu and .gov backlinks are the kings.Get as many as you can,but don't just get stuck to that only. And avoid over doing anything to avoid Google Kick.ALWAYS SPIN YOU ANCHOR TEXT!
Finish your ON PAGE SEO before you start link building.Use the tags wisely. (I'll explain all about on page SEO in a separate thread later).
While getting a domain, try to get EMD (Exact Match Domain) if possible. If it is taken, try .net or .org extension.Avoid using hyphens in domain name.

Sorry its just a quick tutorial coz I have some lack of time :p Will be back with more details later.Spread this as much as you can.

Happy Earning.

Good share.

Based on these factors you could actually assign a 0-100 difficulty value and use that instead to analyze bulk keywords, well at least that's what we did.

would be awesome to have a seriously big, detailed tutorial about keyword research - guess you would get thousands of thanks :)

He's already posted 90% of what you need to know.
1)
a) Go search G tool for a semi-broad niche term.
b) Look around on clickbank for a niche if you're stumped
c) Amazon bestsellers... the list goes on

2) As the op says, "exact match" gives you a better idea of searches
a) download keywords as CSV and you can see estimates month my month
-I download the CSV so I can see if a keyword is trending way down and I avoid those. It's easier for me to see trends this way vs. using the little green image in G tools.
b) I like to set a minimum of 1000 searches per month (locally)

3) What I do with that list is determine potential intent of the keywords (don't let a tool tell you if a keyword has commercial intent - use your brain)
a) A keyword with "buy" in it is a very valuable; I avoid things like "free" or terms that indicate someone is searching strictly for information. But you have to take into account that I don't do adsense and don't focus too much on CPC.

4) Take that list of high commercial intent keywords and drop them into Market Samurai like the op shows above.
a) I hone in on the keywords where the top 3-5 sites are:
-not optimized on page: Title, Heading, etc... Market samurai lets you quickly get a snapshot of what the top 10 are doing. But I really only pay attention to the top 3-5.
-BLP - I try to find keywords where there are some really weak or new sites ranking. If you see yahoo reporting under 100 links, it's a good sign in my book.
--> digging a bit deeper, I hit the drop down arrow and analyze anchor text. I check if those weak sites are actually linking with the keyword I'm digging into. I like to see if those links are from actual authorities or if I can quickly go out and get similar links when I'm doing off page seo.

That's basically what I do

Why does the MS screenshot have a "TheChallenge" watermark?

Sort and very effective tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think hyphens in a domain are big issue, apart from marketing offline.

Nice tutorial though :)
