Had a NYC company that asked me to give them a proposal for a website and SEO services. They are taking me up on the website, but passing up the SEO services because they realized that their "clients are not from the Internet. They are mostly old people who don't have time to search the Internet." No shit! Your clients are not from the Internet because you have no Internet presence. Your site sucks and you aren't ranked for any keywords. So obviously the clients you are getting now are not from the Internet. That doesn't mean that prospective clients don't exist.

That was the dumbest thing I've heard. How would you respond to that?

Tell them what you just told us. They might not want to hear it but they might be smart enough to see that you are right.

I heard the same story from a prospective client who had an investment company. He claimed his clients "weren't online" and $500 per month was too much for a local campaign lol.. It's not even worth your time to try to convince people like that. Just move onto companies who are living the 21st century.

Yes and if their customers are not too age specific, show them the search volumes of the kws related to their business to prove your claims.

I like what you said... you'll need to do some filtering but that the thought process is perfect and especially in your market. Be direct just like you did here, explain the benefits of SEO (more targeted traffic = more $ and a broader base of clientele) and close them for your SEO services.

Everybody is online including seniors they just don't watch as much porn as we do. Really ignorant comments but were they from a marketing person? And even if they are not online guess what their children are!

Companies like this love seeing Google Trends charts of big keywords that are related to their business. Also explain to them that with a better website and better SEO, their chances of ranking in Bing naturally are higher. This is good for them since Bing has a higher percentage of users who are older. You could also show them different keyword stats that they may be interested in or find a competitor who is doing what you want to do for them.

I suppose you don't want to ask them this but why haven't they asked themselves, if they don't want SEO to gain clients, why do they even wan't a website if "The clients we get are not from the Internet"

Haha yeah I agree, you need to tell them what you just told us here minus the couple of swear words. There is alot of good points in your thoughts and your intentions are good too since you just want to see them getting more traffic and revenue.
The truth can hurt, but it's for the best :)

Why do they need a website if they can't see the importance of getting new clients through it?

Pew Research estimates that small businesses that do not have a web presence, including mobile presence, are missing out on 40% of the potential customer base in their locality for a typical small business.

It these customers were available in an advertising medium you are currently using, would you ignore them?

All you need to reach that 40% more is be where they re looking. They are looking online, and often help older family members when they need services.

In addition to that demographic, well educated professional people are tech savvy regardless of their age, and they are the best customer to target because they have plenty of disposable income. You will not target the college educated professional making 80,000 a year demographic (regardless of age) unless you are online. Tech is a part of their everyday lives, and they do not search anywhere else.

If they can't get that, you can't help them.
