I am working on a new website for my business but i need to change the domain name. but the old domain name has some seo value already and its over a year old which is a plus so i do not want to lose that.

would a normal 301 redirect work for this? and would my new website with a new domain name be given the same seo value as my old site?

You can 301 direct your domain, but you'll definitely lose a bit of SEO value, yes. Ultimately you have to decide if the new domain keyword or brand is important enough to warrant the change.

As mentioned above, 301s are good. Also, consider diversifying your footprint with a solid mix of high authority Web 2.0s. Not for the sake of link juice, but for extended reach and they can all point over (with a good cta) to your money site. That's what I do anyway.
