I have bought an expired domain at the beginning of June. The domain was still ranking for ~150 keywords in Google and before it had like 9-10k keywords with about 10k traffic.

So I bought this domain, and firstly just restored the site from webarchive. Semrush instantly started showing more keywords popping up in the SERP in a matter of hours. Seeing this, I moved the site to WordPress (generatepress theme) and a few days later added it to Search Console. Here's data from it:
Screenshot_1.jpg
As you can see, impressions are down completely. From 1,8k on June 11 to just 40 on June 13 and later. This is also reflected by Semrush: a few days before it was showing 3k keywords (from just 150) and now this number has fallen to 2500 and continues to fall.

So here I am now wondering what to do and what has gone wrong?

Is this related to the change of theme and I shouldn't have put the website on WordPress? Should I have waited unless most of positions the site had before I get and only then move it to WordPress? Cause I as say, before I changed the site from the last Webarchive-restored version to the Wordpress, the number of keywords was growing and growing and after the change it just went "pooh!". Should I have added the website at all to search console (lol)?

Here's another domain I have acquired in mid-late April:

The history of it is somewhat similar but not exactly the same. The number of keywords it was ranking for before got dropped was about 1k, but the gap between the time the domain wasn't continued and I bought it is roughly the same (~2 months). However, after restoring the site I haven't instantly (almost) changed it to WordPress and it was sitting on its old theme with missing images and some useless posts - the site before was already used by someone as PBN, but no casino, viagra, bad anchor links etc.

It took me a few days in May to move the site to WordPress (generatepress as well) and I finished doing it on May 19. On May 21 I have installed search console as you can see above. On May 25th you can see the first drop in impressions (halved them), on May 31 the second big drop (again, from ~350 to 140) and on June 1 the third one which finished the site and now it has only 40 to 50 impressions per day with ~300 keywords in google. However, compared to the first site the fall wasn't instantaneous and happened throughout a few days and not one.

I also added some a few articles in late May - early June, but it seems irrelevant.

However, the second site could've been destroyed by the same filter the second one got killed. Both sites:
-Use the same theme
-Were killed by after installing the WordPress theme.

However, there is also a time difference. I finished installing WordPress and putting content the site #1 on June 9. On June 11 put it to Search console, the next day impressions are halved, on June 13 the site is finished. When it comes to the site #2, after moving it to WordPress it was ok a few days and then impressions halved, a few more days of stable impressions and then destroyed. That's why I'm inclined to believe this second site was destroyed by the May update while the first one got taken out by some usual filter.

What do you think? I don't want to lose site #1 (the second one is worse anyway), it had nice traffic before. What would you do in this situation?

Start buying redirects from a web page ranking for your main keywords, other keywords will take care of themselves.

First check what was ranking before you introduced WP. Which pages. Are those pages created and healthy?
Also install in WP some 404 logger (or use Screaming Frog Log File Analyser) and start checking how the crawlers are impacting the old sub-pages, assuming that 100% of that traffic was not originally going exclusively to the home page.

yes, i have checked for 404s

ok, will check it.

but how do I read it? I have installed free version.

Forgot to mention, I haven't restored all pages, the old site had a lot of categories and tags pages which basically duplicated each other. So I redirected them to the main page of the category.

Now checking logs I see 12 404, but half of them are images or files, others are category/tags pages. Others are 301 or 200.

p.s. Plus for some unknown reason the 2nd site doesn't open on my smartphone (android, error dns_probe_finished_nxdomain), yet all checkers give 200 response code.
HHMMM::::

and my wordpress deletes sitemap.xml all time, wtf....

Did you maintain the same Url paths and 301 redirect any that you had to change?

Still trying to figure out what's wrong with the site. Seems like this error coincides with the number of valid pages showed in Mobile Usability tab, but not sure about this... Anyway, now GSC shows only 1 valid mobile usability page and 0 impressions... While google tool says my pages are mobile-friendly!
Now moved the site to another hosting (now works on my phone) and added plugin to generate sitemap, cause the old one still got deleted for some weird reason yet google picked it up. Also fixing some 404s, but there aren't many (~12% if I'm to believe googlebot).

I have removed WordPress and installed the site version from webarchive. Let's see how it goes. If any of you have other suggestions I'm all ears.
In GSC all indexed pages are shown as "indexed, not submitted in sitemap". So this is another red flag...

Hm.. If i wasnt using generatepress myself, I would`ve blamed the theme...
Well, before I have installed WordPress the number of keywords in Semrush increased and after it only went down. So idk it might be something with wordpress, or it has triggered something in algorithm....

Havint eh same issue. Any updates after you restored the website back to webarchive version? didit regain it back? If so i might have a clue as to why.

When you used generate press did you backdate the published date? I have a feeling its the published date affecting him. I also am using generate press and facing same issue.

No( I switched back to the restored version. google console picked more pages:
Screenshot_1.jpg
But it didn't affect anything :( Still 1-4 impressions per day and all indexed pages are "indexed, but not found in the sitemap".

I gave up to be honest. Should have waited until the site recovers its lost keywords and then change the theme to wordpress.

I restored content first, rewrote them later and kept url structure.
How is the time frame? Restore existing content using WordPress or used archive downloaded and make a copy?

If you did use WordPress did you backdate. My doubts are in the dating on generatepress.

And did u leave it for like a month or two before changing content? (Recreate)

Did you start seeing impressions and clicks on GSC if so.

Sorry for so many questions. Trying to narrow down what could be the cause for both of us having the same problem. Thank you soo much for your time!

I usually wait for clicks/impressions coming in and prioritize rewriting content based on that. I always restore straight into a pre-configured WordPress with themes and plugins already installed and configured, backdate the articles before publishing and then come back to the domain 1-6 months later to rewrite articles.

By the way, I'm not having any problems with my domains, I was trying to help @Shwepps
I'm definitely more patient than you guys though, I usually let the domains sit for quite a while, even after rewriting content.
