I want to start learning how to make my own Banners/Custom Designs so I can start "spicing" websites up a bit.

I'm looking at the features of Adobe CS3 Extended and it looks pretty damn nice.. anyone got any other recommendations?

I have used C0r3l Pa1nt Sh0p Pr0, formerly by Ja5c, for years and would recommend it to anyone looking to get started in graphics. The learning curve is not as extensive as Ph0t0sh0p, yet you are still able to accomplish most if not all the same effects.

Learn Photoshop? This program is a pain in the ass..

It's a great program with a lot of options but like every other Adobe product.. it is a massive pain in the ass when you first start using it.

    Hey corygeer!

You mentioned that you want to do photo editing and you also mentioned that you want to create your own banners and custom designs.

True, Photo*shop can do both, but like it was previously stated on this thread, it has a learning curve. And even Paint Shop Pro has a learning curve.

If you want to do quick banners, look in the download section. I believe someone just recently posted a download for Banner"Maker"Pro. That application is "Wizard Driven", which basically means that it kinda' walks you through the procees of creating a banner. It's definitely not as robust as Photo*Shop or Paint*Shop Pro, but there is less of a learning curve.

I personally use Photo*shop for photo editing and Xara*Extreme*Pro to create stuff from scratch, like interfaces, buttons, headers, illustrations, etc.

Ultimately, if you want to be able to create anything you desire , you'll have to go through the learning curve required by some of the larger apps like Photo*shop and Paint*Shop Pro.

    Cheers! - "Wiz"

Check this out, someone posted it on here a while back. I have created some nice banners with the package. It requires photoshop or elements. Don't worry, it is very noob friendly. See the video first.

For simple graphics, I use GIMP. It has a lot of features as many other, but not the learning curve. And its FREE.

Also, any of the big "grand-daddy" apps can be picked-up through torrent sites, and you can usually find a bunch of tutorials for any of them on You*Tube.

'...If you want to go Professional, It has to be Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Less professional is Corel and less professional again is...whatever you want to use.

When I started out with graphic design it cost an arm and a leg to pay for Adobe software and you couldn't get is 'free' off torrents. YES I AM that old...lol

I once had a competition with a friend. He was on a Windows computer using Corel, I was on a Mac using Illustrator and we both designed the same thing.

    I won!

Hope that answers your question, not only about software, but computers in general.

I just made my first banner lol.. I know it looks like shit but I've never done any photo editing or designing before.

Now I'm just messing with my WP Theme's HTML to try to get it to how I like it.. I've learned so much just from fucking around with the HTML in my theme.. I finally figured out how to get my AdSense ads to stick right next to my text.

Every IMer should do something I never took the time to do.. Learn photoshop and web code.. this will make life so much easier on you.

If your not going to be doing professional editing, go for Gimp.
It's doesn't have all the options that photoshop has, but it's good enough for those occasional edits. Oh and it's opensource/free.

I'm going to find every employee who has ever worked at Adobe, works for Adobe or for who ever even thought about working at Adobe and brutally murder them.. Last night I had a little bit of it figured out to where I could make an animated banner and make two colors blend in two eachother..

I've read the Adobe Help Guide, online tutorials, I can not get two colors to blend into eachother for anything now! GRRRR

I will agree.. Adobe products are some of the best and most powerful tools I've ever used but they sure as hell want to make sure that the programs aren't very easy to figure out.

GIMP is decent and free but photoshop is the superior product, even though the learning curve is huge. I personally learned quite a bit from youtube vids.

You cant go wrong with Photoshop, just follow all the tutorials online. I would say I can do 95% of my work without using any fancy plugins either, it's really powerful. If I were to guess off the top of my head about blending colours however, I would suggest looking for a gradient tool and using that to achieve what you want. I ''think'' there's a gradient bucket fill option as well....

Tip: click and hold the mouse button on each of the brushes/tools. It'll drop down even more tools you didn't even know were there ;)
