I dont know if you guys remember, I set up someone's hosting and email boxes within their hosting, and helped setting up their emails in their iphones, and a bunch of other technical stuff. then I came here asking you guys what to do because the guys would not pay me.

now to be fair, after like 2 weeks of emails, he finally replied, saying "my apologies. can you meet today? I have a check ready for you" finally he paid up the $100.

now this was a couple of months ago. last thursday calls me, saying he got a new phone and can't configure his email. he asks me if I am not too busy, can I go to the coffee shop where he is and fix it for him?

I said I can't hear you well, let me call you right back. I didnt call him for half an hour. so he sends me a text message, saying "I have a $500 check ready for you to begin designing our website" lol like I am gonna fall for that. so I said that's great, but I dont have time to go to the coffeeshop, I have a meeting to attend to.
so like 2 hours later he texts me "I will give you $20 if you fix this for me" I said "I am not gonna go to you, if you want, you can come to me."
guy drives to me and pays me the $20

lesson: dont let people like this walk all over you, feel free to hang up on them/tell them to go fuck themselves.
PS I have yet to see the $500 check that he supposedly had ready for me.

I'd ask for the $500 check first, make sure it clears, then start the job.

Don't make the same mistakes as last time. Get a contract written up before starting any work.
