All of the "experts" say that contextual, in-content links are the only links that count these days, and everything else is useless. The truth is, if you want to see what is really working to rank those stubborn keywords, you have to take a good hard look at what gets placement.

Varying your backlink profile is the name of the game to weather the storm of manual reviews and algorithm updates. Here's your guide to maximizing results with PBN links, and why sidebar placements are more valuable than you may think.
  • The Raw Power of the Sidebar
People became really afraid of sidebar links a while back because amateurs abused them, but a clean, relevant sidebar link from a powerful PBN is still one of the strongest ranking signals you can get, and here's why.

---> Direct Homepage Authority - A sidebar link puts your URL on the homepage, which is the most powerful position on any domain as link juice concentrates there.

---> Sitewide Trust - If the sidebar is sitewide, you have links from every single indexed page on that domain, which powerfully supports your money site.

--- >Natural Resource Linking: When a PBN is focused strictly on your particular industry, placing a link in the sidebar appears naturally. It serves as a recommended partner section or trusted resource, just as legitimate websites do.
  • Safe Rules for Sidebar Placements
If you want your website to remain safe, you cannot simply put your target keywords in the sidebar and move on. You have to be smart about it.

---> Strict Anchor Text: This has the highest priority. Sidebar links must be either your brand name or your URL in naked form. If a PBN contains fifty pages with an exact match keyword, you will receive an over-optimization penalty. Trust and authority are built safely with branded anchors.

---> Low Outbound Count: A sidebar with fifty links is harmful. You want your link in a sidebar that links to a small number of highly relevant sites.

---> The Perfect Mix: Use sidebar links to improve your overall domain rating and to build your brand trust. Use specific in-content links on other PBNs to target your specific keywords.
  • Context and Camouflage for In-Content Links
When you use standard in-content links, the surrounding text is just as important as the link metrics of the domain.

---> Topical Relevance: The paragraph that contains your link must be relevant. Linking to a money site for real estate should be from an article that is about investing in real estate or a guide to different neighborhoods.

---> Authority Outbound Links: Add a single link to a massive, authoritative site in the same piece. Link to a government report or a big news outlet. This hides your money site link and makes the PBN appear to be a legit blog.

---> High Up the Page: Put your in-content links among the first few paragraphs. Search engines interpret links put higher up in the page as more pertinent to the audience.
  • Link Velocity
You can’t bombard a brand new money site with high authority sidebar and contextual links in the first week. It seems completely artificial.

--->Imitate Unnatural Growth: Start gradual. Add a high authority sidebar link to establish trust. Then, add one or two contextual PBN links per month. As your traffic increases artificially, you can increase the number of links you build.

---> Link building requires a strategy. Contextual links serve as the baseline, but a premium sidebar placement are the signature elements.

The biggest issue with relying too heavily on sidebar links is that they concentrate a lot of weight into one type of signal. If rankings depend too much on a single placement style, even a small change can have a bigger impact than expected and a mix of different link types usually creates a more stable profile over time.

Thank you for that example. Using just one type of link is a sure fire way to sink a website.

Sidebar links should be used as just one element in a link building strategy. They are useful for building initial trust and domain strength when used with branded terms or naked URLs.

Once a website has been granted site wide power from sidebar links, it is important to build power through more varied methods. This includes building contextual PBN links, guest posts, and other link building methods to achieve the desired control over the linking profile.

Link building, sidebar links included, is all about having a mix. The diversity in a linking profile is what determines if the profile is a success.

Thank you again for that great contribution.

That's exactly what I was wondering. How valuable are sidebar links when they're sitewide and coming from pages that aren't even related to your niche? Personally, I don't find that very natural from an SEO perspective.

I'd rather have one contextual link from a highly relevant page than hundreds of sitewide sidebar links from unrelated content. I know sidebar links can still pass authority, but I'd be cautious about relying on them as a primary strategy, especially after recent Google updates.

I completely agree. Obtaining sitewide links from unrelated websites is a large footprint and a quick way to get penalized. I would never suggest doing that.

When I refer to the power of a sidebar link, I mean networks that are fully related to your exact niche. If your money site is cars, the entire PBN should be about cars. In this case, a sidebar link functions the same way as a natural partner or a recommended resources section. Here, you use branded anchors to provide your site with raw domain trust, not to push a keyword.

You are completely correct that the best way to obtain targeted rankings is a highly contextual link. Sidebar placements should not be used as a substitute for highly contextual links, nor should they be used as a primary strategy. Sidebar placements serve as the basis of trust to allow the contextual links to serve their purpose even better. Thank you for your input.
