...but it's a full-time volunteer position working for a non-profit. (Yes, I have a FT job already.) I will be converting their Microsoft Frontpage-based site to wordpress using HHTrack, switching them over to Interspire Email Marketing, moving them to a decent webhost, and will be in charge of email marketing/list building, their Facebook page, their Twitter account, SEO/SEM and all of their other Social media profiles. They chose me over professional, experienced and degreed web developers. I'm really enthusiastic about their cause and think that if I can help them out then in a year or so I could conceivably land a six-figure job doing this elsewhere.

I am not a guru or a master of anything, I never made a ton of money doing IM, but I know wordpress/php/mysql extremely well and I am a jack of all trades. I have to thank BHW for everything that I have learned and all the experience that I have gained. :D

Great man I know this non profit will give you a very nice start. if you work what they expect from you. then wait for just your "mouth of word marketing clients".

Congratulations! I remember volunteering for a non-profit site too. It was one of my first sites and to be honest, I actually did an awesome job. A lot has changed since.

May it be the beginning of many successes to come!

I done myself few non-profit jobs and that gave me a lot experience and few well paying clients. So In my view Best thing you doing, many people not accept any non-profit job and stick with there 00$$ earnings..good thing!!!

Very few people work without taking $ especially for non profit companies. You never know, some1 might like your work and hire you at a very good $$$$

The local politics involved with this could be a life changing/career changing experience. Never know who you might impress or make friends with.

Treat everything as a learning experience. Autoblogs? Customizing hundreds of Hacked/Warez plugins and themes? Those are nice ways to learn Wordpress completely, in and out, backwards and forwards including php and mysql. Doing Email Marketing/Spam? Marketing pills, casinos and/or porn? Using offshore VPS's, payment processors and bank accounts? Outstanding way to learn server management and do competitive analysis in ways other "developers" can't fathom. Using proxies and geolocation? Nice way to wrap your mind around the google algo's. Making your own graphic display ads for Myspace and Adbrite? Getting kicked off of Myspace and being propositioned to spend $20,000 to run an approved business site on there? Priceless. Shutting down your outsourcing businesses because they grew too fast for you to manage and you weren't making enough profit to justify not doing other things? Holy Shit, Batman. Writing and marketing your own ebooks and business plans, starting several LLC's? I think the response was something like - Hello, Mister Copywriter-Businessman-STUD will you have my Children?

These people were fascinated and enthralled with everything that came out of my mouth, because I mentioned blackhat while showing them whitehat and greyhat approaches to everything. I told them how applicable everything I learned was to their organization. They called me a "marketing hacker" and said they're no longer interested in the other developers.

If you're looking for a solid roadmap, my next year will be built around http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/06/graduate-school-for-unemployed-college-students.html which I highly recommend. Basically I'm sitting my ass down and learning Java so I can develop apps for Android while pursuing certification as a Database Administrator in order to advance in my job.

I will not post here much due to a lack of time, but I will be lurking and downloading themes as usual.
