Rehtaeh Parsons Photos Show Up In Facebook Dating Site Ads

Photos of Rehtaeh Parsons appeared Tuesday in Facebook ads for a dating site.

Toronto man Andrew Ennals was surfing the social media site Tuesday afternoon when he first saw the ad featuring Parsons. The 17-year-old teen died earlier this year after attempting suicide amid bullying that stemmed from a photo taken of her during an alleged sexual assault. Two Halifax teens face child pornography charges in the case.

Its hard to get it removed from facebook untill it gets highlighted by Media since there support staff sucks and takes a lot of time to get a answer from the reporting team so i hope they HuffingPost can do that.

So if i download a pack of profile pics, or scrape some girl images, and use them to create facebook ads for my newly launched dating site, and by chance one of those girls has been murdered/raped etc, your going to accuse me of being distasteful, and not checking to see what the background of each girl was?

The law of averages guarantees that everyone on this forum sooner or later will be using fake profile pics of dead people. (if thats your niche)

If you don't want this to happen, then big brother has to get involved, and clamp down on the law making it illegal to create fake profiles. While they are at it, they will clamp down on proxies, (fake locations) offpage seo, (fake search engine manipulation) spinning text (fake information) the list goes on.

Horrific mistake? Yes. Par for the course? (you decide)

To me it would be more shocking to discover there was a greater outcry about this error, than there was over the disgraceful behaviour of the individuals involved in the assault.

Every site that writes about this girl (including huffington post) that has ads is banking of her story. Whats the difference between that and a facebook ad? I didn't see anything on the huff page saying "all add revenue from this story will go towards helping women who are raped" or "all ads on this page are disabled out of respect for the deceased"

People ought to use their heads. This is why you need to own the rights to use an image. This ad creator could have gotten a legal pic of a young lady to use for a couple of bucks.

Using images you do not own is illegal. If this were a getty image, the ad creator would be facing a lawsuit too.

You cant do business for free, and images are cheap.

Sometimes I think this place is turning into Cheap-ass world.

Facebook deletes dating website advertisements featuring Rehtaeh Parsons
European dating service now banned from advertising by Facebook

A mysterious European dating service drew attention to itself on Tuesday with Facebook advertisements using images of the late Rehtaeh Parsons to entice new clients.

The ads apparently began appearing in Facebook feeds for Canadians in the late afternoon.

But the social network apologized by evening and made it known that the advertiser had been banned within two hours of the first reports on the inappropriate photos -- although no direct contact was ever made in the process of booking and cancelling the campaign that was arranged through a self-service tool.

Facebook also offers a service that allows photos gleaned from Facebook to be used as advertising images if the appropriate permissions are applied to the image.

In the wake of Rehtaeh Parsons' death, her image was widely circulated and even used in other people's profile photos as a tribute or memorial.

The idea behind the service is that photos sourced locally are more likely to appeal to local audiences and is described in the company's Rights and Responsibilities.

A Facebook Canada spokesperson said the Rehtaeh picture had nothing to do with the use of algorithms.

"This is an extremely unfortunate example of an advertiser scraping an image from the Internet and using it in their ad campaign. This is a gross violation of our ad policies and we have removed the ad and permanently deleted the advertiser's account. We apologize for any harm this has caused", she said.

That's some serious cold hearted black hat. If the media sites are revealing what dating site is the offender he or she just hit jackpot.
