I have a client that has a website in English and Spanish. Unfortunately, both the language sites are resting on the same domain as a sub-directory. So the Spanish version is www.website.com/es.

Now the question is, can you target the exact same keywords for both language sites? Will they not be cannibalizing each other? Or does Google know that its meant for Spanish Google?

    Some input would be awesome!

    Zee007,

This is a great question. You can target keywords across languages for the same domain and not worry about cannibalization however be careful that the words you target in another language don't have a meaning in English. For Spanish keywords you are probably ok however there may still be words in Spanish that also have an English meaning. Further, Spanish words may have different meanings in different countries. Your best bet is to get in contact with someone who speaks that language and talk to them about dialect and which keywords you should target to ensure you aren't attracting visitors that are looking for something else entirely.

This post from SEOMoz touches on this subject,

    I hope that helps you,

    Shwan,

Thanks a ton for the feedback. The problem is the client is targeting the exact same keyword on the same domain without translating them into the other languages! Its like targeting "filters" across all the language sites. Its crazy. I will have them translate the words into the other languages. These are problems lingering on from previous so called "SEO agencies".

It sucks when you have to clean up other people's mess.

It's best to go with different domains.

Yup, that's what I'm going to do or at least translate the keywords into the other languages.
