It is recommended to target items that cost over 100 dollars to get a good commission from amazon but if there are items that costs from 10-50 bucks but with high search volume, would you still build a site promoting that product?

keep in mind - It is true that not everyone will buy the product advertised on your website but will purchase a lot of other random unrelated stuff from amazon which will earn you income

Both strategies can be effective, I use both. Personally, I find the lower cost items seem to convert better because:

    A) People are more willing to buy fast when purchasing cheaper items versus higher end items. people tend to do research for weeks on things more expensive and less "impulse buy".
    B) majority of my revenue is actually not from the product im selling, its from people buying other shit with my amazon cookie on there computer.

my thoughts exactly. my theory in this is - if you are advertising a cheap item, people would want to add on more items to their kart to raise the amount till they can avoid paying for delivery fees. i believe delivery fee is anything under 50 bux and free after 50 bucks
