I know that throwing tons of links at a competitor won't help you long term - but what if they had a new website.

I have a travel site and the official government site is always above me - however they rebrand their organisation every year or so and then do a slow 3-6 month climb back up the serps with a new url.

If i was to throw every list I had at them with scrapebox could I get their new site delisted.

if it didn't work they would have got above me anyway, with all their juicy .gov and other natural links, is the way I'm looking at it.

mainguy - I don't think you grasped the difference. I'm talking about a new site - no links. It's a government run site but not a .gov. it's a local tourism authority marketing site and every B&B, motel, caravan park and tourist who has ever been there links ot it - not to mention the other government depts.

When they are doing a rebranding they start out with a new domain and leave the old one to slowly die.

I'm talking about hitting it when it's launched. they don't 301 the old site to it. they just leave it to it's own devices.

I'm a member of the organisation so am privy to when they do a rebranding so could start before it even goes live.

if I was to throw 1,000,000 links at a new site of mine in 1 week I'm pretty sure I'd never see it appear anywhere.

And as I mentioned it's only a matter of time before they naturally rise above me anyway.

i would never waste even a minute trying to take down an established site - that would be foolish.

you dont know what other strengths their seo campaign has so your attempt might not work. for example, if they have a backlink from ebay and you do your tactic, it wont even shake it because that one ebay backlink has already given their domain "unshakable" status.

    just my 2 cents hehe

I would say go for it. If you are sure they will end up above your site anyway you have nothing to lose, except maybe a few minutes setting up scrapebox.
Would be a good experiment, keep us updated.

spammy links HELP people rank better, your efforts will only be ignored by Google or they will help them to rank better.

However, there may be a way to damage your competitors rank another way. Its something I've only recently come accross, I'm not willing to discuss it here, but send me a PM if you're interested.

you could also report his site as hosting malware ;P there are plenty of different options for that, and even if its a false report it could still hurt their ranking temporarily

i was just thinking out loud - if you can do that on a forum. they rebranded about 3 or 4 months ago and are now top 10. when they next rebrand I'll try it anyway
