On my site I use a plugin(think it's called platinum SEO or something) and it allows you to enter keywords for that post.

I also have a box for tags.

I've noticed that my tags and keywords are kinda similar.I try to make them a little different though.

Does anyone know if I should just use one of them ? And does google etc think it's spammy if you use both ? Could you use the exact same words for both even ?

    Thanks

I randomly select 6-8 tags...relating to the KW though.

I think you should use both, but they should be different.

Google has openly stated that they don't use the "keyword" meta tag. Still, Bing and Yahoo DO use them so you might as well use them.

As for tags, you should always use them and here is how.

Let's say you're writing a post about Danica Patrick switching over to NASCAR. Your tags should be the generic things you are writing about while your keywords should be as specific as possible.

It's OK to have posts that use the same tags, but keywords should be unique to each post.

Tags: Danica Patrick, NASCAR, Racing, etc...

Keyword: Danica Patrick NASCAR, Danica Patrick switching to NASCAR

While you're at it, thanks to the Panda update, you should also select the option in the Platinum SEO plugin to "noindex" your tag pages. Often, tag pages may only consist of one or two posts...and those will just be summaries....so Google could view that as "thin content" and drop your rankings.
