Been debating whether or not to use a table of content on my site and figuring out how much it actually improves my site´s SEO score.

I have bookmarked over 20+ blogs from authoritative figures in the blogging, marketing and SEO world and none of them uses a table of content on their articles.

Do you guys use it? Do you think it improves your site´s SEO if you do? Will it hurt if you don´t?

    Looking forward to your comments.

    Cheers!

I use them for two reasons:
    • I love them, they give a good and easy way to skim through content
    • You can set triggers to see which sections draws the most interest (each link can be set as a trigger in GTM).

    I thought the same!

Been heavily focusing on building my articles in a way that allows visitors to "scan" the content effectively without having to actually read it.
Waoo didn´t think of this. This is just smart!

    Thanks!

Definitely I will say yes if I have long content.
It will be the one reason to feature yours in snippets. In users point of view, they will get the exact information what they looking for it from your articles. So they will love it.

But I don't think it will hurt your SEO at the same it will not be ranking factor as well.

They are like TL;DR. And users can go directly to the section they want.

It also makes Google show "sitelinks" under the snippet.

When you use jump links in your page google will crawl them and sometimes show them in the results.

Thanks a lot guys for all the comments!

It just makes so much sense using a table of content not just for navigational purposes which improve UX but, also, what @Chris.Roark points it out about GTM.

But as I mention on my OP, I checked around 20+ of the most notorious bloggers´ websites on the marketing, SEO and blogging niches and 90%+ of them don´t use a table of content on their sites.

So, obviously, some alert bells started to hit big on my neurotic little head :D :p

    All good now!

    Thanks again family!

There's reason why 90% blogs that you check not using table content.

If you use it wrong, will trigger over optimization on keyword density.

Alert bells! Alert bells! Alert bells! Alert bells!

So, what would be the best way to avoid this while still be able to use table of contents on my articles? Just target H2s?

Think it as a viewer. A toc will help user navigate your article especially if ita 2k+ words. I always bounce off if the site has huge info but not toc, it looks uprofessional and wastes my time.

If it was that easy, why some of the most authoritative figures in the marketing and SEO world don´t apply that?

This isn't true. Google is way too smart to know it's a table of content, and not some duplicate non-sense.
There isn't a single website on the internet that got penalized because it used table of contents.

    Penalize? No.

    Much harder to rank? Yes.

Could it rank? Yes. But you need much more links than you should have.

I think you should use common sense here, don't overcomplicate it. I use ToCs as I would just leave an article without it and I'm sure some of my visitors would as well. Also, "the most authoritative figures in the marketing and SEO world" have their own reasons, which shouldn't bother you, but I'm pretty sure some of them use ToCs, at least in some form (maybe just H2s). You can also check your competitors, I know all of mine use ToCs.

Spend more energy on writing articles and building links than on stuff like this, as in IM you're bound to end up with a bunch of conflicting information no matter the question you ask.

Adding LSIs to the body content and subheadings to avoid, as you say, "trigger over optimization of keyword density".
