For more competitive terms you simply need more SEO done (generally speaking).

Expectations are usually met. But they must be reasonable as well. If you plan to rank for Garcinia Cambogia with 3 links... you will be disappointed.
My links (3) have been live for a week or so. I have already seen initial improvements. Average place for all keywords have improved from 17 to 9 in only a week.
I expect more improvement within 60 days.
