Bit of a weird one here, but basically I use SEO platinum pack or something like that on WP to easily do all the essentials.

    Let's say I'm doing a car comparison site I'd do this :

Car comparison | find cheapest car | etc etc

But when I go to let's say carcinparison.____ it says this as the title : | car comparison

I don't know where the " | " comes from tbh... Don't know if it effects SEO at all but I'd like it sorted.

    Thanks

Click the Platinum SEO tab in your wordpress control panel and then look at the options for post title format, page title format, etc under the platinum seo plug in options

Thanks will have a look later.

But checked earlier and I'm 100% sure I didn't type that in.

You're leaving the page title option empty, which you can edit when editing the page. Even if you use a static homepage, you can add something as the title.

Then it'll come up as "pagetitle | car comparison"

    That must be it then.

But I used a title for my Page, called it "Home" then made that my static homepage.

    Just thought of something.

On the default wordpress setup for the page title I done "Home"

But under platinum SEO pack or w/e I left that title blank.

    Is this what's causing the " | "

Should I leave the default option blank then instead ?

    Hmmm

That's what I meant with my previous post. If you put a title in the platinum seo pack thing, then it'll show up.

Just typed Home in the platinum SEO pack bar.

So now my homepage title is :

    Home | car comparison

Is that an ok title for SEO yes ?

I always set my title with my most important keywords first and use my site name in the title tag as well

ex - blue widgets comparison | blue widgets store

Hmmm that's what I done under the platinum SEO pack, but that doesn't show up for some reason on my
Homepage. Actually, that must be because of the static homepage, I'll try find a way around it now :)

    Got it done now.

Only problem is that my main keyword is last mentioned in the title.

(it's already in the title, so under platinum SEO pack I just put all other keywords in the title)

Don't know how to stop my main keyword from auto coming up in the title without platinum SEO pack :/

checker your default title tag settings. there might be something in there like %separator% in some of the page/post settings. You can probably also choose from | pipe, - dash, : colon, and etc as the default separator. This is how yoast and all in one SEO plugins work.
