    Hi Guys,
Till yesterday, my main keyword = steadily climbing from 10 - 8 - 6th position on page 1 for a highly competitive keyword.

It was ranked for months on page 1, just moving very slowly.

Today morning, nowhere in top 100!! Major penalty or dance?

    FACTS:
    0) No google code on the site (no g analytics/webmaster tools, etc.)

    1) It's a relatively old domain, about 1.5 years old.

    2) Has got fair bit of link diversity, lots of anchor text diversity.

    3) Was using sape, but then other domains on sape are not hurt at all.(yet?)

    4) The domain is still indexed and shows results

    5) No other keywords are hit! If i search for "other keyword", "other keyword 2",
then other results from the site are showing on page 1!

    5) No new major link building except using the recent big buddy's newspaper service.
But I think his service actually gave the domain a boost from position 10 to 7-6.

So what should I do now?

    • Wait a couple of days?
    • Sign up on webmasters tools to check "unnatural links" or something?
    • Remove all sape links asap?

Please advise as this was a good $$ bringing domain...

    Probably Dance.
Wait for a week or two. It could last for 3 weeks in extreme cases.

Happened to me before, it came back in 1-2 days a few positions higher. Wait it out. Keep backlinking.

I don't know if it was manual remove, or what happened. But all my sites which used Slingshot got removed from SERPs.

    Did you use Slingshot?

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

Its kind of like a woman. If it comes back it's probably a dance, if it doesn't its a penalty.

Well, I guess I will have to wait and see, although it does seem like a penalty since
google's "behavior" is odd that it's showing other results from the site for other keywords,
but it's just kinda "angry" to show it from this page!

Lol, love the analogy! Sad but true.

But seriously guys you think I should really hold the fort and wait for a couple of weeks?

Should I remove the Sape links?
Or will it do more damage since I would be indirectly suggesting that I am using high pr links?

I did use the super awesome high authority links from big buddy's newspaper service, and it was what got
me from position 8-9 to position 6!

wait for a few days / weeks, buddy. if you still got, it's probably dance and you should analyze and optimize (as a whole) your site again.

Looks like it's a dance, and waiting for a few days to a week is a good idea. If it is a penalty, I guess your other keywords are nowhere to be found as well, but you said all other keywords are still holding their positions... so give it a little time.

All other keywords FOR other pages are still there.

Not for this single page that's gone! I mean aren't penalties "page wise" ?

    Hi, clickwhale!

Is there any change in your lost positions? You should definitely check on your GWT account not only for unnatural links, but for any messages about problems with your site you could have received. Don't rush in removing any links yet. It will be a good idea to add some fresh, quality content to the site and see how it reacts.

As for the sape links - I would suggest to check on their PR and more importantly the PR of their homepages. If some of the sites that you have purchased links from have been penalized in the past month or so they will have lost their PR completely. You should remove all such links and leave the rest.

Also, read this article on possible reasons for sudden ranking drops: http://seofen.com/sudden-drop-in-google-rankings-what-are-the-possible-reasons/. Good luck!

Have you recovered yet? its been quite sometime. If it didnt return it could be a penalty.

    Hey Guys...
    Thanks for the proactive responses...

    HERE'S THE UPDATE:
Well the ranking have not returned to original ones (page 1, position 6-8), BUT, the page is jumping for the main keyword on page 4-5 and sometimes pages 10-11...
    (as reported by serpbook)

So it has partially recovered from the "nowhere to be found" phenomenon, but still a loooonnngg way from previous positions.

You seriously think a site with sape links (or even otherwise) should be put on GWT!??
The number 1 BH rule I follow = Don't put on google code or 'relation with google' on your sites!!! No adsense, no analytics, no gwt!

But I like your suggestion of building some fresh high quality links to see what happens, and also checking on the sape homepage PR's.

Anyway, will update this thread when more results pop in...

Sounds like a dance to me. You have to remember that Google makes changes on their search algo on a daily basis. And major changes comes every 30+ days on average.

    1 Month Update:

The page is still on -100 to 200, so we can NOW conclude that it's 100% penalized!

I removed the sape and any paid links, but I doubt it will ever come back.

    So anyway, that's it...

    THE END.
