.Sucks is a new TLD and it's launching on March 30th.

I think these guys have had the best idea I've heard of for a while - it's inspirational.

For any brand name or trademarked name the price of registration will be $2500.

    $2500 to buy a domain!

But think about it - what company is not going to buy their own domain? Because if they don't, they risk some disgruntled customer or competitor buying it. They almost have no choice.

It a sensational idea and I predict they will make a fortune.

But there will be other opportunities here too, especially for any of you in the ORM space.

Standard registrations are going to be $9.95 and I can see ORM companies buying up a lot of domains as part of their service - well that's what I would do if I was in the ORM space.

Unfortunately I can see a lot of nefarious cybersqatting activities happening around this TLD too.

But hats off to those guys. They've had an absolute brainwave!

Anyway, here's a link to their pricing page so you can have a look for yourself:

But what customer is that upset that he/she spends $2.5k on a domain just to bash the company?

They won't have to spend that much.

The $2500 price tag is only during their 'sunrise' or early-bird period.

After that, on June 1st they will be available at standard prices. Which is why I think they will sell $2500 domains by the thousands.

I think this could be a hit or miss, but more likely miss than not.

I mean like, you could start dozens of tlds like this, why not use .blows or whatever?

I'm pretty sure you can start a crap ton of tlds with the same idea behind it.

This is what I thought as well, I was under the impression that large brands have legal rights over domain extensions/etc to prevent cyber squatting and things like that.

The big boys will just claim the domain as a copyrighted name.

Exactly, I see this as something like communism, possibly okay in theory but in application awful.

It would be the fact that it would be different than a reddit post "f*** facebook"
or a random blog going up.

So they have a .sucks extension...? and?

Here is some information relating to XXXXXsucks.com which should also be relevant to .sucks

The bottom line is, if your intention is to purchase a .sucks for any reason other than to build a site because you have a legitimate grievance with a company, or your own brand protection, I would not bother.

I'm not certain but I think people could get away with it - people have the right to complain about a company so using the name for that purpose could be perfectly legal?

Of course they will still have to be mindful of defamation and libel laws.

I wouldn't bother buying for brand protection.

Let's say I own Walmart and buy walmart.sucks. What's to stop people registering:

    why-walmark.sucks
    walmart-still.sucks
    walmart-dick.sucks

    and hundreds of other permutations?

I hope someone will be able to get some data and crunch some numbers so we can see how much money was spend on those domains.

Hmm... I think I`ll go for porn.sucks and create an anti-fap course for the humble price of $99.97. BHW members will get 50% discount of course.

Too expensive for a domain, especially for this kind of TLD for trademarked names, however, $9.95 isn't too bad for a domain.
