Newspaper is not a lightweight theme, due to the many plugins, scripts and functions running in the background on each page. I suggest you try activating a cache plugin to improve your loading speed, you can try WP Rocket which is great for non-developers - just activate the most popular settings and it will start caching your websites to your visitors. You can message me and I will be happy to help you with configurations.

I'm not concerned about the site speed but rather the impact of renewing the ssl that was scheduled to expire at the end of the month.

For speed I'll switch over to Astra or try newspaper 10 standard pack plugin to remove most of the bulk from the theme.

Again, anyone with suggestions about how to recover fast from the impact of updating ssl let me know.

Well, your hosting should help you with that. Unless you are using digitalocean.

I don't understand something here. How did you figure it out that there is any negative impact because of updating SSL? I never heard of something like that before. It seems to me that you are attributing the drop to the update of the SSL, but they should not be related.

You would have to update the SSL certificate at the end of the month anyway.

On top of that, what kind of SSL are you using? I use free LET's Encript for my sites and they are all set to auto-renew. It is free and done at my hosting.

Hope it clears out for you.

How can SSL impact the site so much? My hosting also provides the free Let's Encrypt certificate that updates automatically.

As for the speed, is Astra really the fastest theme? I tried it and it was painfully slow, over 8 sec with CDN, Autoptimize and without any sidebars or widgets. Tried another theme with the same setup, it was 3 sec (this should be improved too, but at least it's not 8 sec).

Astra also f**d up my admin post editor (added huge padding around the Gutenberg blocks making the blocks narrow and impossible to edit on mobile devices), and I found that it's a known bug that Astra theme authors just don't care about. I was lucky I'd found that bug before I paid anything for the pro stuff.

Sorry to disappoint you mate but I highly doubt it's from the SSL. Wait a few days and let's hope that the traffic gets back to normal.

I changed the ssl easily with the tools provided but it did take about 30 mins for the change to be reflected.

Nothing negative so far and I've seen some improvements. Waiting for another week to be certain.

Namecheap shared hosting... Lol I'll look into upgrading it and the cdn on Sunday after I do some speed fixes with the site.

I'm at 3 seconds so it's just to get it down to 2 second load times.

I've seen it affect other person's and other websites that I maintain at my 9-5.

It's not just an update, it's literally a change in the certificate. So the certificate codes and everything changed unlike in a typical renewal where you'd probably maintain the same certificate?

Namecheap provided 1 year free comodo ssl and that was set to expire. So when I purchased another ssl they issued a brand new one to me. Instead of just renewing or extending the old one.

I used thrive with Astra on site 2 and I'm getting 2.3 second load times. But it isn't the best theme and I've seen a few bugs with sticky header on mobile.

That's why I'll give newspaper 10 standard pack plugin a shot first. They claim you'll be able to remove all the bulk from the theme and only use items you need like a specific header. I've seen people get a huge seed bump on their forums so I'll test it and report back.

As for the SSL I think it's because it's a completely different one instead of an update. Maybe Google had to recrawl the site to check and that had an impact.

But again I'm not sure, my traffic seemed to start picking up back in the night and it's not so bad right now. I'll watch it throughout the day to see what happens.

Yea, I'm not sure either. But the day started good yesterday but as soon as I changed the ssl everything dipped and I got half my usual Friday traffic.

So it's either the ssl that I changed or it's a bad Friday. And I hope it's not due to the links.

This morning seems like it's starting to pick back up. We'll see how it goes.

As far as I know, SSL cant be extended, technically, when you renew a certificate, you are purchasing a new certificate. I dont know why it's like that, but maybe for safety reasons.
You can try to use Cloudflare since they have free SSL and CDN as well, and free too. So win-win solution.

Yes, a recrawl could explain that.

Also, maybe the shoppers are holding back and waiting for Black Friday deals, not searching for stuff to buy as actively as usual.

Good luxk with your journey, mate! Personally i think the reason for the slight dip in traffic is due the links you bought.

It's pretty common for rankings to drop (albeit for a short time) for a while after a linkbuilding campaign. I'd advise you to wait for about two weeks to pass before making any serioua changes.

And if i may ask - other than speed - do you have any other reason to change your site's theme? If it's because of speed only, then I'd recommend you search the forum for the service (saw some pretty damn good reviews there) instead of changing something that's already working for you.

Just my two cents. All the best with your journey!

    @Bloooop

I've had some traffic loss yesterday too, so it might not be just the SSL.
Went from average of 315 daily visitors to 260, so about ~15% loss yesterday.
The truth is, I changed a best xyz page content the day before the loss, so some of it might be because of that :)

Thanks for the tips about content, I've used the bucket brigades idea from your post + some other ideas I saw working on my other sites.

I'm also running my website on Astra Pro and others on Genesis + Elementor.
I'm not sure what caching plugins you are using, but WPRocket is the real deal.
After I've tested many many, I got the best results with it.

One website I bought which had a TTFB (Time to first byte) of 4 seconds, literally went down to 0.5 sec load time on the same hosting.
Full site load time from 5-6 seconds to <2 seconds on the same hosting!
I've disabled all the caching plugins and activated WPRocket with almost all the options and that was it. Didn't even change the theme...
Yes, I'm sure there was a bottleneck, which I could have fixed somehow, but WPRocket fixed that for me.

Another website I bought had again bad load time and bad score on gtmetrix .
I've changed the theme to Genesis, installed WPRocket and the load time is down from 4-5 seconds to <2 seconds.

All the websites I've bought increased a lot in rankings after the speed changes.
From #10 to #6-8 and similar.
After that, I fixed onpage things, run SurferSEO, added TOC, better interlinking and many things and they are now #3-4.

Nowadays when I'm looking to purchase websites, one of the first things I look at and hope for is slow load time, because I can fix that in 1-2 hours and get a huge boost in rankings.
Easy fixes and great improvements for my rankings for free!

The idea for all who are reading this thread is that website speed matters a lot...
Go fix your website speed and get those juicy rankings!

    Go get the gold buddies!

Hi, you said you got most of your pictures from unsplash, pixabay, pexels, and freepik.
But did you get general pictures or specific product pictures?
Let's say a product named Blower XYZ,
Most of the time, I don't think you can find images of this product on these sites.

Wow thank you so much for your advice!!!
I've just uploaded WP Rocket to my sites and got 1.4s full load and A (100%) on GTMetrix, and A (98%) on Yslow on one site! It broke some parts of the layout on my other site though, but I guess I need to exclude some files and it's going to work.

    Glad my advice helped.
Usually the broken layout can be fixed by unticking the Optimize CSS delivery in File Optimization. I had this issue on one of my websites and unticking that option fixed it.
Try it, it might fix the issue for you too.
