Success ranking main keywords, but how to get secondary keywords up there too?

So I started a site about 6 months ago, it took me 6 months to get 5 of my main keywords to top 5.
Now I am planning to move on to my secondary keywords. They are already on page 2/3 (as I usually diversify my anchor text and links in my GSA/SeNuke campaign).
But here is what I am a little confused about

    1. Should I still continue to run the keywords that I am running for my primary keywords? Or should I stop them, reconfigure them for my secondary keywords instead?
    2. I know it makes sense to say "run them both together", but that means my backlink volume is going to go up and I am afraid if I keep going this route, i will be running 3-4 campaigns for just 1 site alone, and beside, an increase of backlinks all in a sudden might get flagged?

    Please share your inputs. Thanks.

keep building low volumen backlinks for your main keyword just to keep your anchor ratio pair.

You don't get to rank however many keywords you want just by having them anchored in links. You homepage optimization will limit you to just a handful of keywords and some variations. If you want to continue to rank keywords for your site and capture traffic, you need to start setting up internal urls and ranking them individually. Either convert traffic on the page, or via content/structure maneuver the traffic back to your homepage if that's where you're converting it. Doing this will not only make ranking your other keywords much easier (and even possible), it will also boost your entire sites authority and over all rankings.
