    Hey everyone -

Is it considered a bad idea now to submit websites to directories to help with rankings?

    Directories such as:

    Dmoz
    BoingBoing
    ScrubTheWeb
    Etc.

Should I only submit websites to paid directories? Or would it be wiser to look for link opportunities through competitor's backlinks rather than trying to find directories?

    Thanks everyone!

I don't submit to free directories anymore, but there are a handful of paid directories out there that are worth paying for a link if you're building a long term website, look for 3 things, high DA, high TF and low Alexa Rank and a reasonable one-time fee, since these directories are human edited I speculate google place more value on them than user-submitted directories.

Great, thank you for the response. What kind of average fee would you say is reasonable? I have seen lots of "directory submissions" and stuff for example local Chamber of Commerce organizations may require a $500 annual "membership" fee that will allow you to post your site in their directory.

Do you happen to know maybe the top 2-3 powerful paid directories that are still worth using? Would you mind PM'ing me them if you don't want to share?

Thank you so much for your input

I think the idea of directory submissions being harmful is a fairly widely held misconception. If you post the same content to hundreds or thousands of directories then you may get the links ignored by Google which would be a waste of your time but generally if you are posting different content to less than 100 good directories it will likely help a little bit at least.

At worst usually you would be wasting your time as opposed to causing direct harm.

There is some high Authority directories and having good traffic sites. If you choosen and submit on paid service directories, it will be better for your ranking

For a $500 annual fee I would probably want a site with at least DA/TF of 50 and Alexa below 100k, I prefer one time fees under $300 for solid sites above DA/TF 30 and below Alexa 300k, some are BOTW, JoeAnt, but just google around paid directories and compare their domain metrics against the fee and you'll get a good idea of where some value is.

directories are more like link farm now days.

IMO, just get some high quality link and let google rank naturally.

Why would you pay $300 for a directory listing?

You could purchase 5+ sponsored guest posts on niche relevant websites with the same DA/TF for that price + the benefit of the link being contextual.

Find bloggers in your niche, offer them a cheeky few quid under the table and bobs your uncle :)
