I've heard it both ways some people say you should submit your website to search engines and some say it looks more natural to let them find it through backlinks what are your opinions on this?

I guess that depends on how much traffic your actually looking for. Nothing wrong with doing both in my opinion.

Let them find it by themselves. If your stuff doesn't get indexed naturally, it's a signal you don't have enough backlinks.

Back in the day it was always better not to submit; I don't know if there's an official penalty now, but submitting your site is a signal that the site has an SEO behind it, rather than just being a site that should rank naturally.

The exception would be pinging your xml sitemap and rss feeds whenever you update the site, that is quite a natural thing to do.
