    Hi,

I'm building a network of MNS an I was wondering something that most of you will think has a pretty basic answer.

I was hoping I could use sub.domain.com, sub2.domain.com etc where sub is my niche, and domain the broad theme.

Is there any reason why I shouldnt reason like this when it comes to SEO and link building ?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi TayaX,

Great question to ask, as each one has its own specific purpose. For SEO benefits however people usually go with a sub-directory instead of a sub-domain.

Reason being, link juice from the root domain can be passed down to sub-directories however not to sub-domains since they are considered to be their own separate entities.

Hope this helps clear any confusion you may have! :)

Thank you for your fast answer. However, what would happen in terms of ranking if one of my site gets hit, would every other one in sub-directories be affceted too ? And if yes is the answer, is sub-domain a solution to separate all the ranking of my micro niche sites ?

If its for churn'n'burn site, I'd choose sub1.domain.com as the penalties apply only for the domain and the sub-domains are unaffected. If its for an Long-term Authority site, go with subdirectories like domain.com/sub1 . If you'd like to know more about why choosing a subdirectory instead of a sub-domain is good for SEO, look at about.com's traffic stats. They switched to sub-domain with their new layout and all their rankings has dropped and now regaining very slowly.

I see I see.... I'm looking at long term niche sites but the main domain won't ever have links to the others niche sites. Each site will have its own layout and everything.

I find it less "sexy" to use sud-directories rather than sub-domains... But if it's really better for SEO then I don't know...

Subdomains is basically the same as root domains just like a fresh new site with N/A. if one sub gets hit, the wholesite won't take affect.

    for example see sites like
    sub.wordpress.com
    sub.weebly.com

spammed the crap out of, has no effect on the root, even so saying this, its better to use subpages for building an amped up authority site.

I am doing the same thing and have decided to do some split testing on this. Some of my sites are going to be sub-domain and some will be sub-directory.
