I'm putting together a disavow file for a client and I can't seem to find much information on this more specific question on the googlez.

Can anyone shed some light about including subdomains in the disavow file? It looks like you need to include the entire URL if it's just one page but when you disavow a domain is it necessary or could it affect the efficacy of the disavow file? Also, if the subdomain is not www should it be included? Does it matter whether it's www or not?

Thanks, I hope someone can help shed some light on this.

I'm fairly sure the way it works is:

To disavow a certain URL only:

    h**p://baddomain.extension/badpage.html

To disavow everything from a certain domain (For example w*w.baddomain.extension, subdomain.baddomain.extension etc.):

    domain:baddomain.extension

To disavow only the subdomain of a certain domain:

    domain:subdomain.baddomain.extension

You need to add the subdomain as a separate website on google webmaster stools.
