Subdomains and SERPS

I was gifted a domain and I just added it on to my only shitty HG web hosting plan. Will this affect future developments in terms of ranking and security issues?

Invest a few bucks in your own domain. What will you do if the person who gifted you the subdomain decides to take it down?
