I have a site that's doing well however I have a 'how to' section of the site that I really want to start trying to get ranked for different search terms than my main site. I'm going to start building my backlinks but I'm just wondering if google prefers a subdomain rather than a directory?

For example which would have a better chance of ranking well:

    moneysite.com/new-keyword

    new-keyword.moneysite.com

or is there absolutely no difference?

I just spent some time reading what Matt Cutts and a few others suggest, and it sounds somewhat contradictory to me in SEO terms. Subdomains would be useful if you're blocking off a new section of the site that may have its own style, theme, etc, whereas directories organize content across the keyword. I would do whichever is easiest for you, and maybe someone else can chime in.
