If I have done a good seo job with a domain. Will the subdomains of that domain also rank higher in google?

Think of a subdomain as a page. It will be apart of your current site but and pick up some of the "linkjuice" but also have it's own rankings as well.

However, since your current site is being crawled, it makes it easier to build up your subdomain compared to a new domain.

subdomain is a new page, a completely new website.

but the authority can still be passed from the main domain.

google treats sub domains independently, so to get the benefit you will need to link to it as other people have mentioned.

Possibly but remember according to Matt C sub domains are going to be treated as internal links real soon.

Essentially, sub-domains are generally just sub-directories of the main domain, and as roberteb says, G will be ultimately treating them the same. As long as it's interlinked from the main site, then it will benefit from the power of the main site. I have several large sites which use sub-domains and they all benefit from the power of the main domain.

I'm sure they won't send the boyz round with a baseball bat or anything...

I think they've got better things to do than object to you adding a sub-domain...

subdomains function essentially the same with the main domain.
