Is it better to create a subdomain or subdirectory like how the tube sites do, or should I go for a new domain and link them all together for shemale and gay porn?

Subdirectory would be easier although it depends on your choice I would like to mention Google do not really see these as a difference so use either one you like, if it was me I would use sub-directories as they are easier to manage and build upon. although you could add multisite to your network and use subdomains and manage via multi-site option is totally upto you nither have a negative impact aslong as it's closely related to your main website.
    Hope this helps.

I think you are better up with a separate domain for gay stuff. Shemale fits very well inside straight category because shemale lovers are straight. Remember: shemales are girls.

I see that the manwin network has small areas on their websites where you can change between straight gay and tranny porn, and they use a subdomain instead of a new site.
