    Hi

I got a company website. Up until now our company have been selling stuff to others who sells it, but now we will start to sell it directly from our domain as well. The question is, should we put it at shop.companyurl.com or companyurl.com/shop

The shop include a lot of information and will become bigger (in content) than our main url (3 1/2 years old domain). But our main url will also have a lot of content (old content and older links). Linkbuilding wise, do we need to treat the subdomain as separate site and start link building all over again.

    What would you have done?

    best regards

If it was me, I'd use the subdomain option. If you needed the shop side of things to be hosted elsewhere only (for whatever reason), it would be easy to do.
I think Google treats a subdomain as a part of the root domain now, although searching for the correct answer gives you both yes and no it doesn't :)

    These are 2 different strategies:

With an internal folder you get:

    - instant PR and linkjuice passed from the homepage if linked correctly
    - lower authority in the long run
    - low volume backlinking required

    With a subdomain you get:
    - not much PR and linkjuice passed from the homepage
    - better authority in the long run
    - high volume backlinking required (a subdomain is seen by Google as a "different" website)

It all depends on what you want to do with the said shop. If you want to rank it for some high comp kw's I would suggest subdomains, I've had great experiences with clients when choosing this strategy. If you don't want to rank for some hard kw's then choose either way to implement it.

I your case is better to use subdomain and link to it from main domain homepage. It will automatically have main domain authority and link from homepage which will be legit and proper way for this reason.
