Alright I am too f'ed off to blab on and on like I do so I ill get straight to the point...

I keep hearing this stupid damn siren noise on my laptop at random times. It is very loud and fvcken annoying and my partner is also getting pissed off at it. I've been looking on Google for months now but have found nothing, and don't really want to have to pay someone to fix it.

I have tried to look for things that trigger it and the only thing I have noticed is that it only seems to go off if I have turned my router on and am connected to the internet. Before we got the net connected here at home, I used to take my laptop to the public library and it started happening there, and it also did this in public net cafes, and it is still happening on my home connection. I am not sure if there is some virus on here but I would really like to get down to the bottom of it, as it is super annoying when I am listening to music or YT vids, and especially annoying when it wakes my son up.

If anyone knows what is causing this and what steps I can do to fix it please reply to this thread. The first person that gives some info that will fix the problem will get a free PR3 homepage backlink (less than 10 OBL's on homepage, mostly internal links) on my website (in signature). Thank you in advance!

I would hardly think it's a matter of a virus that you hear such a noise -- it's pretty strange that it stops when connected to internet. I didn't quite understand what noise it did, was it like a beep?

If you want to discard viruses, though, you can try running MalwareBytes Anti-malware and see if it finds something.

be sure to put a piece of tape over your webcam. if someone has ratted you they can make your computer do all kinds of funny things and watch your reaction on the cam.

I was meant to say it only occurs if it is connected to the net... I have scanned my machine multiple times with McAfee (legit version from my ISP) and also Malwarebytes but it is still there.

I havn't had any accounts etc compromised yet (not even my bank account, emails etc) so its all the more confusing.

And the noise is like a police/ambulance siren that goes for about a minute then disappears, then comes back a while later (on average about every 2 hours).

What do you do when it starts beeping? Maybe your antivirus has some function to warn you.

    You hear voices?

On serious note - is this siren comming out from speakers, or laptop itself?
You need to give more details about where, and when it goes on.
Also do let us know what laptop make do you use.

The siren noise comes out of my inbuilt speakers, and I am using an Acer Aspire 5720 which I got brand new in 2007.

    @ iSmokethatohyeah:

I have done a few system restores but it still is there. This morning I downloaded a legit version of my Windows 7 O.S from the university (they have agreement with Microsoft) and burned it to disk so am considering formatting everything if everything else fails. Just have to find my install files for Adobe CS5 master collection as that's my most valued software.

Run CC-cleaner + delete, and re-install your sound drivers - it could help. Is siren noise long? Can you do quick check as long as it is?

What do you mean by "Run CC-cleaner + delete" ?. I am running CC Cleaner now and I know of the function that "permanently" deletes files and folders...

And am doing a search on Google now to see how to reinstall sound drivers...

Are you sure the "siren" isn't the BIOS beep codes (HERE)?

Perhaps it is overheating and you have some software that makes the siren alarm go of??

I dunno, I would just reformat it, why fuck about eh.

Yeah I don't really want to fuck about things too much, but it is the last resort... I am checking my CPU temperature (I heard somewhere this could be a cause) and at the moment my Core 0 temp is 65deg and Core 1 temp is 67deg... I know they are very high and it probably is because I am sitting beside the window on a sunny day (am not running many programs at the moment).

@ ExtraWinner : I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

sfi: next time you hear the siren click small speaker icon in right bottom of your window, and click "mixer" - you will see then all application that are running, and can make noise.
Check which one is making one (you will see sound "altitude" going up) - this will help to determine you which soft is causing this - easy :)

While many computers might have an alarm sound when detecting overheat, the fact that it mostly happens when you're offline seems strange.

However, if it comes from inbuilt speakers you can probably turn it off, right? Check the tempĀ° whenever it happens again and try to find some pattern.

Sounds to me like a driver issue. Torrent DriverGenius and give that ago. Even on a reformat if you are installing the same drivers as before then nothing will change, hopefully DriverGenius can find an updated driver from the manufacturer that MS Update can't.
