ok I don't do seo for other people because i dont have the patience to deal with stupid people. today reminded me of this fact.
There is this lady near where I live that offers like divorce paper preparation, immigration papers preparation, etc.
today I went to her office and she was talking on the phone. she was talking about keywords that she wants...
so when she got off the phone, I said "oh, you are doing SEO"
her eyes opened wide "WOW! you know? how do you know?" like SEO is something so special that nobody knows about it.
I ask her what keyword she wants to rank for and she says "divorce"
I tried to explain to her why this is not a good idea and it wouldnt get through to her.
I told her i can rank her for "divorce document preparation CITY" and she says "but nobody is going to type something that long.
then she says how much i would charge. I say $300 a month for that one keyword. which is reasonable, because i have to pay at least $150 to buildmyrank and other services.
she says this company is doing 5 keywords for $149 a month.
I wished her good luck and left.

How do you deal with these clients? I would like to do SEO for a living but its so hard to deal with these people.

I do not do SEO for clients, but I think that you would need to explain it to her and other customers in a different way. We forget sometimes that only a few years ago this was all confusing to us. My Dad still calls me up when he goes away asking me if I can check his email for him and I have to explain to him again that your email is not inside your computer, you can access it from anywhere.

You don't deal with people like that, you stay nice with them and keep them on the back burner and they come running after a while

Why do seo for other people anyways? If you belong to this forum you should be making enough money or have the chance to be making a lot more money then you ever would if you would work for someone. Fuck working for people, that whole things is shitty. Work for yourself and make yourself money. I could care less to rank someone else's keywords when all I want to do is rank my own.

You say, "I'm giving you a price of $300 per month because I live here and want to see you do well. When you see after a few months that these other guys didn't do a thing for you, here's my card, but I'll have to charge you my regular price of $399."

    Wait for phone call.

Because stupid people will pay big money for small results.

Omg LOL! Good luck getting to M$10/year and having a STABLE and RELIABLE income/business by working on your adsense sites/CPA methods/etc.

Offline marketing is a GOLD MINE and people getting into it are actually very smart (most of them).

Make sure she has your contact information and have her call you when it doesn't work out. Sometimes it takes a bad experience for someone to learn their lesson. You can also take the initiative and call her in 90 days to see how it is going.

Usually the conversation starts with "Oh I've been meaning to call you..."

if its a big client, you should act amazed and ask for the company's info since you have never heard of such a great deal or such a powerful seo company... act real exited like all your problems are solved...

Make her wonder wtf is going on and let her develop some sort of doubt...like it is too good to be true...don't act sarcastic, be serious...

she will ask more questions which your reply should be some real results, stating how REAL SEO is done and the normal great success the average seo or you have.

Tell her you hope she does not get scammed by this new "phenom method" and to contact you if she needs any SEO insights or second opinions for free.

Give her free advice if she asks and make her realize you know your shit... she will eventually disgard that company and come back to you...

this is where she will realize your value, and the power is now in your hands. she will WANT your help...

    Now jack up your price.

Always good to have more than one income and not put all your eggs in one basket...

Its also fun and gives satisfaction (atleast for me) to help others make money.

I know what you mean. I had a potential client. He wanted to rank for a fairly competitive keyword in San Francisco. I told him $399 per month, for 6 months, which I thought was extremely reasonable. He said he could do $120 a month. I laughed and told him he could get in touch with me if he was ever serious. Not worth my time.

I remember having a client who brought in a book "Secrets your SEO guy doesn't want you to know" and gave me a smug look. I looked at the 1st 5 pages and the last 5 and said "Crap. This book doesn't have a copyright day on it. If it's even a year old it's out of date." At that moment I stood up and wished her luck and left. She would of only been about $250 profit (if that) so I decided it wasn't worth it.

You have to remember that if you're making $150 a month of a client but the work you have to do plus dealing with them is 10 hours, you're only making $15 an hour.

Haha, I get the exact same thing. Keeps ringing me to talk him through attaching images to e-mails as well. The most annoying thing is he always assumes the computer is broken when he's being a dumbass.

SEO is all game of patience bro, you do working and working and waiting to see results. If you are good link builder then you can be a good SEO dealer because not only this client but many of customers have same thinking, they think where they get lower prices is good but they will experience the quality difference after having some working.

So do not lose your patience and try to be a good marketer. Tell her the weak points of the SEOs working for them and tell your quality and positive points to her. This will make her trust you and then if you ask for more money then others, still she will prefer you.

To deal with people like that you just:

    1. close your eyes
    2. put your hand on your chest and
    3. say: "all is well" 3x

    :D
