you have to realize not everyone is familiar with SEO,,, break it down in basic terms.. bring your laptop with you and show him an example, google a keyword related to his niche.. most likely he will recognize his competition and explain to him how many people search for that term and how they are looking at his competition first which means the competition is getting more clients..

Print out a pdf for him from adwords of what people actually search for. I didnt understand this at first either but now that I know keywords I would never try to spend more time ranking for a competitors name than I would ranking for what the competitor and I are filed under in the phonebook.

So you have to show him that only xx number of people google his name but xxxx number of people look for "pheonix doctor" or whatever.

is that the doctors glove on your head? i wouldn't buy from a chicken head either ;)

i've been in sales all my life. remember one thing, selling is not telling. ask open ended questions, listen... and i mean LISTEN to him. then redirect him to understand what you're talking about. conversation is key and that's how you will win him over. remember, YOU are the expert, let him know without expressing your ego.

edit: when i use to train my sales employees, one of the basic skills i taught which seemed to show the results almost immediately is the "feel, felt, found" method. google it... and start using it in every scenario.

the problem is, to me, this stuff is common sense. I dont know why someone wouldnt understand these. if anyone has ever used google, they should know being on page one for your keyword is important.

simple answer: not everyone is as smart as you in your field. :)

if he's the type of buyer who has a huge ego, sometimes to get the sale, you might have to go along with what he wants. I own a web design company as well and i want to pull my hair out when people want "geocities" type of websites. sometimes you can't even argue with the person... give them what they want.

unfortunately with seo, you pay for performance so you'll need to deliver. simply accept what he wants but when you get back to your office, do whats necessary to drive traffic to his website. He'll thank you for it later.

that's your job to explain to him and make sure he understands the importance of ranking high.. and once he understands then he is going to realize that he needs your service

The average person does not even know that Google is an advertising business. They think they are in the search business.

Trust me write out a nicely thought out proposal that outlines in black and white how many people search for particular keywords in his locality and he will be swayed.
