I have a 10 year old money site which has been my main income for 10 years. It faded a bit, so I busted my ass over the last year to get it to the top for it's main keyword, which is very competitive, plus a lot of .gov and .edu sites ranking high. It was around #50. A lot of work, a lot of services, a bunch of rental homepage links and a lot of money later, it's #5 for the main keyword.

I bought another site off auction a few years ago, and it's a three year old domain. It sat there for a couple years till about six months ago I put the site up. It was a micro niche site targeting a 5k exact term in the niche. It was an each micro niche so I did a couple services to it and it was #1 for the micro niche. And was already ranking #50 for the main niche keyword. So I said I'll use this one to test out services. So I did one service, and it moved to about #34, can't even remember which service, but it was about $200. Then I did another service and it went from #34 to #20. Then I did another $30 service, and it went to about #17. Thena ll the sudden two weeks later I'm #6. It has about 100 links going to it, while my other one has about 13,000 links to it, a ton of which are very high quality, both natural and paid.

Makes absolutely no sense.

I completely agree it seems like they are just trying to be contrary for the sake of it and with no regard to how contextual or quality the index is especially in the last 2 weeks. Sites dance almost every other day and with no regard to backlinks or on site SEO. I dont know more than anyone else but it seems I am observing that.

1. EMD are doing better with less backlinks and good onsite SEO. They seem to like .org
2. Actual KW on page mean a lot more now
3. Age seems to have been bumped a bit as well.
4. Less seems to be more as far as on page KW density and they are attracted to LSI a lot more

However just like you said it is as if they are moving ranks just to be contrary and sites I have spent almost no time on except those factors have came up out of no where. You can see that it is all over the place because there are so many older and abandoned sites at the top of searches now with barely any alexa rank at all ( That will change for them however LOL ).

Tis a fickle beast.
I have a 4 page MNS that I ordered a 15k SB Blast on about 6 months ago.
I literally have not logged in since I started it, and it has been #1 for it's main KW's this whole time.
Site makes me 50-100 bucks a month on auto.

On the flip side, I have a 200+ page truly informational site with content seen nowhere else on the net (not monetized), and it has been in a penalty for about 3 months now.

That's why I just keep plugging along. Build quality, and it will all work out in the end. (hopefully)

Yes I agree, google makes no sense.

I am #2 for a kw and my competator has a pr0 while I have a pr2. I have more quality backlinks then it and yet still he out ranks me. My on site seo is better then his. It makes no sense!

Yeah I forgot to mention, my ten year old site hasa bout 150 pages and this new site has about 8.

Well its a different keyword therefore different competition. Am I missing something here? I had a ton of keywords which were really low converting and it was hard to get to first page. Then i had a lot of high converting keywords that jumped up to one.

I think the point he is making is that sometimes all of the things that we think we understand just don't translate into results.
What you say about competition is dead on. No matter how much analysis we do, only Google truly knows how hard it is to rank for a keyword.

I have looked at so many search results in my keyword research, and just scratched my head.
Sometimes the rankings just don't make sense for what has been done on the site.

It's like having sex ;) Everybody gets off of something different, just because you're good at it, doesn't mean it's going to be easy to make your new partner have an orgasm. Then other time is just clicks.

No no, it originally was a different kw, but I started ranking for the same kw as my money site so I did a couple SEO services, and it ranked for the same kw as my money site.

Now I almost wonder if I should try and rank this other sites instead of my main site.

Oh i see. That is weird. Doing competitive analysis before hand almost seems pointless. So, I totally agree.

Imagine you see a bunch of big players like amazon, ebay, home depot etc.. selling a product. But none are really optimizing for that product and doing seo for that product, I always feel those are easier then sites that are fully optimizing around that specific product, but are not big players at all. At first glance, the big boys seem to be dominating that niche.

Personally I have had no trouble outranking the big boys, but the smaller sites optimizing around those sites seem to be a lot harder to beat. Anyone else agree or am I just tripping?

Great point. See the same thing over here.

There is a site that has 2 indexed pages. Ranks number 2. 1.3k Exact Match KW
Site has 21 external backlinks from 6 class c subnets. Nothing special. Best is a PR3 homepage link.

My site sits under it at #3, and I have been trying to push past this fucker for like 3 months now.

WTF right?? Literally its just saying "this niche looks cool, Im not going to look at the competition because I won't even know what I am looking at"

Is the content on your website very good quality? I noticed google has been loving content recently. I started a blog and decided get my girlfriend to write high quality content. It has 50 backlinks and is ranking 2nd for a keyword that gets 12k searches a month.
