An online petition is not going to stop a multi-billion dollar corporate/bureaucratic effort due to go into effect within 24 hours. Better to launch legal attempts to block its implementation, and a political drive to withdraw from the EU.

I thought only the US was bad about this. I know here doctors cannot prescribe any kind of herbal remedy. Only a "pharmaceutical drug" can cure a disease. This is crap.

Chemical medicines isn't an option at all. It just make you sick.
Chemical medicines is one of the biggest business after all. With lots of brainwashed "doctors" involved to help - for the pharma industry.

People voice will not matter with this kind of view.
A petition can improve situations if in right hands and with people support.

    My 2 cents

Give me an example of an ailment, that can be cured by a herbal remedy, that cannot be prescribed by a doctor, and cannot be bought off the shelf, that isn't illegal in it's own right.

Extracts from the peppermint plant have been shown to be effective in treating respiratory infections. Extracts from garlic, echinacea and aloe vera have been shown to be effective antimicrobials.

There are very major concerns over antibiotic resistance at the moment (this is what has caused MRSA), so the EU banning these substances from being sold will make this problem worse. In addition I also have concerns about how it will inpact Chinese Medicine shops here in the UK as I love my accupuncture and cupping treatments.

This legislation means that all herbal remedies are illegal unless they have gone through tons of senseless beurocratic policies.

Name the specific hemp product that you can purchase currently, but would not be able to do so under the new law, that also cures skin cancer.

Some herbal medicines can work, but the fact is, the majority of them are pure garbage.

What this law is doing is trying to prohibit all of the random crap that costs $35 for a bottle of pills and is basically just a placebo; no scientific testing or regulation yet it claims to cure ailments. In fact a lot of these pills will contain only like 1% of the supplement they are advertised as the rest will be random shit/filler.

Most of this stuff is a scam but sure it can cure minor problems because they're not physical problems but rather in your head and the placebo makes you think you took medicine so its better, hippie.

Usually I wouldn't reply to such a comment. Making such a statement without an education in the subject is maybe not the best thing to do.

When you get sick do you just pick a drug and start taking it in the hopes of getting better? Most people would go to a doctor, because the doctor has the education to choose the correct drug, understand how it interacts with the body and any other drugs being taken. Different drugs interact with different areas of the body, the route of administration and dosage are all important

Now with herbs exactly the same applies. Someone with appropiate education needs to ensure that the appropiate treatment is selected. The proper preparation is used (for example garlic contains allicin which is an antibiotic but which is neutralised by stomach juices and so needs to be administered in a disolveable capsule) and the correct dosage and route of treatment selected. In addition combinations with other herbs and drugs need to be taken into consideration (for example willow root contains salacin which is the active ingredient of aspirin and if a person is also taking aspirin can cause an overdose). In women on contraception, st johns wart can prevent it working.

Now there is extensive scientific research into the methods of action of these herbal remedies. Just pick any herb you like and do a search on sciencedirect.com and you will see what I mean.

I hope that you may be a little bit more open minded in future.

    This.

Back in the day there was nothing but herbal and unorthodox medicines. As science progressed and such treatments were tested for effectiveness the ones which actually worked are now called MEDICINE.

Untested Herbal and holistic medicines are an absolute crock of shit which make your local pharmacist serious $$$ off peoples ignorance/desperation.

Not entirely true, did you know even Alexander Fleming discovered pennicillin in 1928 it was not until 1939 that it was used as a medicine. Taking something from a herb into a medicine takes hundreds of thousand (if not millions) of dollars.

Now considering there are around 300 commonly used species of herbal plants, and each plant may have 100s of extracts which may be used as medicine.

There is a major problem at the moment with antibiotic resistance, however drug companies are slow doing the research required here. There may be several reasons however in the end it comes down to money. If what they have now works and makes them $$$, why bother decreasing their profit by researching new drugs?

After the research to get a herbal extract approved to be classed as a drug costs around £20k - £30k. Many smaller companies that specialise in herbal remedies just do not have this money avaliable.

The placebo effect is pretty useful actually. Studies show that the more unpleasant or bizzare the appearance, the more frequently the effect occurs. Red pills are better than blue or white ones; same with large, hard to swallow pills and bitter taste is of course the evergreen :)

A real, substance induced effect is hard to prove but same goes for every new drug. I didn't know about this EU directive but their regulating frenzy is really starting to be annoying. They should be taking steps to stop devaluing the currency in the first place. Cases where people go berserk on the klamath weed and end up with a clotted brain are not that common.

On the other hand, if some stuff is claimed to be beneficial, it should be investigated and proven as such otherwise it's just snake oil. In this regard herbal practitioners should see it as a chance to prove once and for all that their science works.

The pharmaceutical industry has nothing to lose or gain as most of the chemical drugs are past their patent anyway, the formulas are free, and each company is practically selling it's competitor products. This means that anyone with a clean enough lab can produce them, name them something different than an already trademarked name and sell them. There are hundreds producers of aspirin, penicillin etc.

Homeopathy is one of the more interesting branches as it is unclear where from the producers are getting the clean water for their stuff considering that every water body on the planet already contains traces of every chemical element in concentrations much higher than each dilution described in the homeopathic literature. It's like trying to dilute the alcohol in wine with vodka.

The problem is the marketing to the consumer...

Holistic medicines have Zero benefits, that is proven, yet they are marketed to mothers of sick children. Is this right?

    No.

Testing should ALWAYS be done in a lab, not on random gullible consumers who think there's a good chance they'll work. If a medicine is effective and the manufacturer can see it works, they'll get it certified and make big money of it, rather than selling it for a fraction of the cost in the witchdoctor isle of walmart.

Herbal medicines claim to cure or help currently untreatable illnesses, if they were treatable a pharmaceutical company would be all over it! Being the only company on the market to cure an illness, come on, there's hundreds of millions in that.

R&D is what makes or breaks a pharmaceutical company. Extensive testing is done 24/7. Granny's dock leaf ointment treating acne is just an old wives tale.

As for Alexander Fleming, you can't compare him and his mouldy bread to 2011.
