    Hi,
I was just curious to know if others are doing something different than what I am doing to rank a professional service based website. Here are some steps which I have taken to rank a site well in search engines.

    1. On page seo steps mostly done
    2. A blog for the website site.com/blog which is updated weekly
    3. Site map submission
    4. rss submission of blog
    5. directory
    6. forum links
    7. comments
    8. creating some blogs on web2.0 sites
    9. writing articles press releases and some squidoo hub pages work
    10. facebook/twitter/g+/linkedin etc

is there anything else you are doing special in white hat to get ranked which I might not be doing at present.
Please suggest me a few ideas

One of the best things you can do is to create/provide high quality, fresh content on your site regularly

Not sure I would call your plan white hat :)

From that list I would focus on guest blogging, social media, commenting within your niche (forget about seo for this one if you do it well you'll get traffic) and paid press release distribution. I would also throw in some PAID directories.

Most important thing is to build 80% of your anchors as branded.

Haha, yeah, why you call this white hat when this is all low pay backlink strategy. First think about offering some INTERESTING and FRESH content. I am not going to use the phrase Content is King but...you know...Anyway, do proper on-page SEO (that's basic). If you dont know how to do that check around the forum, you will find some good tips. Furthermore, get some more FRESH content. Once you're sure you finished all of these you can try to subscribe to Google news in your niche. Like this you get the latest articles regarding your product/service/whatever and you can go posting on those forums/blogs with the link in your comment. Of course do not spam, that's not White hat. Build connections, talk to people, be cool. That's about it, pretty much...

I'm working as a link builder for a very huge company and it really pains me that however me and my supervisor pushes it, we can't persuade the higher-ups to take a look at content marketing and implement it.

In my belief, content marketing is the future of a brand's white hat approach to seo and it's sucky that we can't even have a buy-in for a corporate blog to start things off.. : (

We currently do event listings, directory submissions, press releases and a bit of social media initiatives.

    couldn't agree with you more.

I think it has to do with the mentality. dinosaur clients think that online marketing is just offline marketing done over the internet. they couldn't be more wrong with that.

if it wasn't for the pesky rent and bills, i would have left this job already... being a corporate slave sucks..

Sack them off, I won't work with clients like that. They take up more time than anyone else with a ton of questions but won't help you out by sticking on a new posts about once a week. Whats that, 30 minutes time a week at the most?

My opinion is that the only potential and advantages you have - 1) news source 2) positioning your site as an company's one and 3) extra people. 1) As for news source that is clear. A main problem of usual webmasters - they do not know where to take the content which would be filled again and again through years. You have a good source for new developement - your content is produced by the company. Any holiday, success etc. might be mentioned and turned to the new matherial. Any news is a good reason for writing new article. 2) Is clear as well. Maps, organization directories etc. But these both can not compensate the other disadvantages in application of other SEO methods. If you spam the comments in blogs this might be a deep loss for the brand. If you bought links and beeing catched - the same. In all cases, there are huge restriction for you. If your company is not a leader and a good keyword itself, that make your problem to be very diffciult. The 3) point is sometimes useful. You your staff is well educated and can write something without looking silly, you have an extra source for good content. Try to teach and encourage employers to write good articles. Maybe personal blogs. That is incredibly difficult if the "company" consist of K-12 level guys (as mine). It is easier when people can write something interesting - for example no problems with content in Universtites... In all cases, try to get their links from the linkedin and other social networks, and also teach them about linking to a website. Depending on a number of employers, this sometimes might be helpfull.

One easy way to get quality links to your site is to make sure your vendors are linking to you if you are running an e-commerce site. Most vendor pages usually have a fairly decent pr rating and they should have a distributors page they can throw your link on. If they are a smaller vendor, you can even try to get them to feature your company on their homepage as a recommended place to purchase from.

Overall, I would try not to spam comments too much. When you are dealing with a company page, you do not want to risk penalizing the company site. As with what others have said, providing fresh quality content is the best way to boost your rankings. For the company I work for, we collaborate with our vendors to put on free webinars. They do all the work and we reap the rewards. Not only can you use these to build your email list, you can then take the recordings and use them for videos or post them to places like slideshare. We also have our vendors write content for us to put on our blog which is a win-win. We get quality content we don't have to pay for and our vendors get some extra advertising out of it.

Exactly, some things/people really are not worth the time, money nor effort. This is definitely one of them.
