Starting your own web hosting company can be a great way to pull in some extra income. The great thing about it is you can spend a exact set budget each month on your hardware + software licensing and it'll never change until you get more clients, which results in more income - So it's a win win

Anyways, I wrote a short article on how to start up your own web hosting company and I cover all the hardware + software needed for client managing & such. Check it out http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1034270/starting_your_own_web_hosting_company.html and please post your opinions/comments/thoughts so I can expand on it and maybe write a second one.

Thanks

Hey man!!! you're my hero! thanks a lot, really, was looking for this kind of guide about hosting companies ;)

no problem man

i have some experience with web hosting but not enough to qualify myself as an official.

this brief article talks about the mainstream software used to maintain and operate a web hosting business.

the best thing about web hosting is that it can be done entirely from home and requires only a minimal investment - and there are no risks in expansion since your expansion relies on your client base. You have no need for expansion until your client base goes up, which in case provides you with a higher income to expand

Anyways, glad you enjoyed the article ;)

Its thankless work. Don't get into it unless you have heart.

Agreed, or have a layout or guideline to follow so you can keep everything in track

Unfortunately, as a founder of a web hosting company - it is relatively easy to fall into a "screw it" attitude after facing some major issues such as hackers, money problems, and angry customers

I personally think web hosting is an over saturated market. Just seems like everyone is doing it these days.

It does seem oversaturated yet the demand for it is still insane. Offshore hosting is in extremely high demand but no web host other than NL ones have been consistent enough to provide it long term.

Bad advice. In the year 2008 its a very bad idea to get into Web hosting. I should know. I have owned one for 9yrs and have lost money in great amounts over the last 3 or more years. Its so bad i had to go out and start IM marketing. I make more money in IM than i would ever make in WH. The market is over saturated, everyone expects everything for nothing and everyone's selling plans so cheap its impossible to make a profit. This is not good advice. If you are thinking about it, forget it. If you are Hostgator thats another story. They have been around for years and have the clients. I even own my own boxes and still struggle with it. Thats how bad it is.

When the overselling started the honest people lost their asses, a sad simple fact. The cost effectiveness just is not there for what anyone leases the space for if they truly give what a lot of them say. Anyone selling honestly does not get going, or, as mikie knows, does not stay afloat.

LOL. Another example of how you can make money ....

Create an article of some interest to a community (in this case BHW) and publish it with a service that pays you for submitting the article plus per impressions (in this case associatedcontent) and you have a winner .....

So everyone that ones a guide to make money ... here it is.

Sure, you can look at it in a subtle aspect like that but in the conrcuopia of fathomess world we live in, it is still VICTORY

sure thats a money making method too lol

Thank you, I was somewhat interested in this but will take your advice and look elsewhere for some extra income.

I have found a very reasonably priced and good dedicated server company based out of Denmark, You have 20+ operating systems you can chose from and can install on the fly! Each dedicated servers comes with 4 IP addresses (from different class C subnets)

I have a family member in the biz who says the same thing. He might be switching over to only providing dedicated servers and/or managed sites to local businesses. Basically he's interested in going for a niche or just quitting altogether.

This is an interesting read. I always believed hosting to be way too time/energy/money intensive -- especially for just one person. I can't imagine how exhaustive it must be for a one-man-show! And to be losing money while busting your tail? Whoa!

hmmm i disagree on some of the points made in this post
i started with a resellers package from ebay about 3-4 months ago started flipping sites on DP and a few other places and talked them into keeping the hosting where it was as i can give them support etc,
well out of all the sites i have sold about 5 have moved from me but i have now upgraded to my own VPS and the site is getting about 2-3k hits per day with ads all over the place and im making over $150 p/m profit already
we have had no downtime either
this is not an ad for my hosting im just stating a different approach on how to fill your servers

I was thinking getting RPS from ovh with 110gb Hdd about 30e/m and then selling seedboxes for 20$/m i think you could easily host 5-8 guys on 1 server since you get 2gb ram and some prosessor

its like dedi but with virtual Hdd (only bad thing is that if they take it down since they do not allow copright , i doubt they even check that but just in case i would need pay back for all customers)

Recently our city got 120/2mb but dam if it would be 120/120 my closet would full of computers wich would be atleat 300$ /m priced ;P

maybe someday

It does involve a lot of capital to be invested.....and maintaining the up-time does become a headache..at time
