Hello guys, in 2 days I'll start cold-calling local stores and offer them web services at very competitive rates. What I'll be doing is designing simple, good looking and responsive HTML sites for their businesses, provide shared hosting for a year, domain, simple logo, basic SEO and help with Google Places registration for just $100. All of this takes me 2 days at most anyway. For existing websites with outdated/bad designs, I'll simply offer a redesign. I hope to be doing this as a full time job. I live in a crowded 2nd world city, price should help convince them and the crowd will make sure I don't run out of people to work with.

I plan to WhatsApp the store owner directly when possible for a more personal approach and easier communication. I think this will also help me avoid pissing off the customer by disturbing them in middle of their work, after all I'd be calling workplaces, they are bound to be busy, no? I'll try to establish a "that friendly IT guy" persona which should help me get referrals in the future.

I already have an idea about the way I'm going to do this but I'd really appreciate the input of the IT veterans here too.
    • What were some mistakes you remember making when you first began?
    • What helped your business take off and succeed?
    • What advice would you give to your beginner-self with the experience you have now?
I did my research on this board but links to related threads are also welcome, I don't want to miss any useful info.

And my idea on finding new customers: I was thinking of walking the nearby neighborhoods and collecting phone numbers and websites from store signs, but then it hit me; why not use street panorama function of Google Maps? :D I already collected 10 phone numbers in 1 hour just by virtually walking the streets. Some of you guys probably do this already but I still wanted to share it in case some fellas could use it

Also isn't the price kind of low. The cost of hosting and domain costs atleast $20 for cheap hosting. That only leaves you with $80

Your price seems very low, especially if you intend on paying taxes and registering an actual business. I don't know which country you are in but around here, businesses prefer to only deal with other businesses or freelancers paying business tax.

Also, why choose Whatsapp as a non-annoying plattform? I would imagine most business owners are middle age and most of them wont know what Whatsapp even is. The usual option is email, since that is accessible instantly through phones nowadays anyway, and all businesses have an email.

You can reach out through email. Find business with no online prescence, or a shitty site, evaluate if they would need a good site, then send away an email. Harvesting phonenumbers from google street view seems like a less effective way to spend your time.

I have the same Idea as you, that I want to start in as soon as possible.

A cool idea that I heard is to offer them a 20$ per month subscription other than a 100$ one time payment.

A local guy here made a flyer for his sales letter and drives around going to places in person giving his pitch. Only reason I know is a couple of clients showed me the flyer and told me the same thing about him. They said he wasn't that professional about it and very pushy. I took a look at his footprints and found over a dozen sites he made, so this method is definitely working for him. All using the same shitty template for various businesses in my city. His design skills are very poor, but he's decent at ranking them. He charges around 30-80/month depending on the package (just website + seo).

If you are going to work with local businesses I'd suggest you just visit them in person and have prepared a simple presentation that you can give on your laptop/paper whatever method you choose.
Also you should check out local schools and universities. Especially the teachers in the universities... teachers/professors in universities tend to have personal websites and most of the time they are quite outdated.

You have to specialize, or at least seem like you do. "Hello, we specialize in making high-converting web sites and marketing campaigns for pet stores". Will increase conversions around 3-fold.
