Many people here sell SEO services (links, articles, web 2.0 etc) and do pretty well. Many companies who have a website for there business as you know dont shit about SEO. They know "build it and they will come" type attitude. Nothing against it BUT I feel thats where we come in and im thinking about getting my feet wet.

Im thinking about targeting the small business owner either locally (my state) or enough to spread out to support anyone looking. I will outsource 50% of it and the rest do myself. I have an aged domain I will use for this but here is my question.

Ranking for SEO is very tough and sometimes its like "Well you do SEO but you dont rank well yourself"! So my thinking is to again help the small business person out with giving them some keywords to rank for in there niche and building around that. How do you market that though on the web in a sea of other scammers really looking to take there money.

I have an outline already of what I like to offer them (as I already have 1 client @ $400 a month and want to kinda base the services on that) but just not sure how to "market it" either just local or broad.

What would you do OR do for your seo business?

Ok but when you go "live" are you trying to rank for my state business, or what are you trying to rank for. Thats where Im stuck. I know what I can do, I know I can help BUT when gettign the actual site out there other then going on local business forums and such how should I "word" the site to gain that local crowd. Hell are if they are not to sure about SEO how the hell are they looking for it LOL

My experience from running multiple marketing companies is try to focus on just a few services, or better, one service. Do just a few things really well, then expand into other areas.

Do something well, see how much it costs you, and how much you can sell it. Find out how many sells you need per month to turn a profit, then double it. If you can't profit well, there is no reason to open a business.

Ranking for seo related terms is indeed competitive and honestly a waste of time. The amount of time you will need to invest just isn't worth it. This is because you can get a starting base of clients using traditional marketing methods.

Direct mail and email campaigns to local business are a great start! I would pick out types of businesses you'd like to work with, compile a list, and start their. Once you get a base going to will get new business from referrals alone.

Another idea is to reach out to interactive marketing agencies in the area. Provide them some sort of service and in return ask that if they are contacted by clients who are too small for them, they will recommend you. A lot of agencies have minimums and can't take on small clients who would be perfect for you.
