hey i want to start my own seo business but need a bit of advice

now im not an seo expert but i know a good bit about it and a lot more than the average joe

but how do you get your customers

i have written a template letter

which has gaps to insert stats such as monthly searches ect

would it be good if i found the stats for certain businesses first then send them a letter

or should i send them a letter with out the stats and offer them a free consultation

or should i go in person with the stats in my hand and explain them to them and what i would do ect

how did you do it to get your first customer

and advice would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Use the search button. There is a great post by Taktical which could be exactly what you're looking for.

HI... I honestly think the easiest thing to do is to get a few people you personally know on board first. GIve them a few freebies and get their websites moving. Cause, just sending thousands of emails, might not land you anywhere. I remember doing the same when I was launching a new service, but really did not work. Even if the stats are there, didn't help much. I chose a niche, wrote an informative sales letter and sent it to hundreds of people, not a single response!

If you do get a few people to buy your services, they themselves would speak to others. No better advertising than a happy customer IMHO :)

your response from sending a letter to an unsuspecting prospect is going to be atrocious...your best approach is to walk door to door and talk to them about why they need seo services and then why they should choose you over other companies. Think of it this way...when you get something in the mail the direct mail piece is trying to generate a response from you...all that is said to you is what is on the dm piece...it can't answer objections or answer questions that might come up...all it tries to do is signal a reaction from you (phone call, website visit, etc.)...

Now if you walk in to a business and talk to them...you ARE the direct mail piece. If you really want to succeed at any business, you have to generate sales. You are not going to generate enough sales by sending out 1000 dm pieces to keep you busy and make a good amount of money. Take your business seriously and take the harder route...you'll be glad you did...

If you have your own website then post the list of services you offer. Post promotional videos, use social media like facebook, twitter and youtube to spread out your company. One of your primary competitor are from india, they offer cheap seo services but if you think that your company is better to them then keep moving forward.

You definately need a few sites in your portfolio to prove you can rank sites. Proof is in the pudding right? Work on a few of your own personal sites, friend's sites or someone you know before you start offering to the general public.
