For 2011 I really want to make a viral website. Don't ask me why but it's something I've always wanted to do. The most viral thing I can think of is bizarre/funny pictures and so have decided to make a blog around this.

Now I know you are going to say that there is no money in this niche but as long as it makes a hundred dollars a month I'll be happy. Here are a few thoughts I have.

I want to try and get all my traffic from anything other than google. I don't want to do any SEO, keyword research, back linking etc. The reason for this is that I think this is a competitive niche as far as the search engines are concerned and to be honest I'm a bit sick of that at the moment.

I totally want to rely on viral traffic and I believe that social networks are more suited to this. I also believe that google will rank me naturally if the site is getting traffic form other sources. I believe google is moving in this direction more and more

I want to try and use mainly Facebook and stumble upon/Digg. I am working on creating a couple of power user stumbleupon accounts that will have a few hundred followers each and I am pretty confident I can create tens of thousands of hits a month just from these. Enough to make the site go viral if it's going to.

I also want to create a Facebook page and use this as well, but this is some thing I am a lot less familiar with. Thinking that I could buy a load of fans and get it a good fan base to start it off.

As far as the site goes itself I want to run on Wordpress with an autoblog plugin. I have wordpress robot and it can handle multiple feeds and post as I need it to. The most important thing I want to achieve is to try and get repeat visitors.

Some reasons for this apart from having powerful stumble upon accounts are:

    Evergreen niche

No duplicate content issues. Images are for the time being immune from the dupe content filter.

Traffic from viral sources. Not relying on search engines

I believe that if you can get to a tipping point then this kind of site can snowball and could be truly automated hands off income

Thinking of building a list and sending image or joke of the day

I am going to choose a brand-able domain name

Thinking of monetizing with cpm banner ads or some kind of affiliate setup for my friend who owns a funny greeting card business

I have a budget of around $500-1000 to get this site up and running and will pay for anything that will help. Maybe getting videos rebranded and reuploaded to YouTube

I know there are some guys here on bhw that have massive experience with this kind of site and would love some feedback/ideas from you.

Here are some questions i have.

Are there any issues with using feeds from other similar sites, are there copy-rite issues to worry about?

What is a good autoblog plugin to use. Should wp robot do it or is there something better.

What is the best way to automate a Facebook fan page to help me build traffic.

Is there anything extra I can use on the site to make it more viral or to retain visitors and get them coming back. Ie. Something social networking wise that allows them to interact, upload their own images.

Will bandwidth/ hosting need to be looked at. I am on baby plan from hostgator which is shared hosting. Thinking of upgrading to VPS for my other stuff, but will an image AB need a lot of power to run?

Do you think i should setup 100% autoblog or pay a bit more attention to things and post less. Exercising a bit of quality control if you like?

Any other tips or insights would be greatly appreciated as I'm going to start on this soon.

I may well keep a diary here if anyones interested

Hosting and a domain are defenitely needed to be looked at if you want to go viral.

    Thanks,

Thanks, so what would you say the minimum requirements would be. Thinking of this plan.

    CPU

    1.13 GHZ
    RAM

    768 MB
    Disk Space

    30 GB
    Bandwidth

    500 GB
    $49.95

Would this be enough or more?

    Hey thanks for the link!

What's the point in that script though? Why not just set up wordpress, what does that script do that WP can't - (Not quite getting it!)

The beauty of that site is the simplicity and the giant arrows.
I read that post yesterday and actually browsed through a couple pictures because I almost feel drawn to do it.

And it refreshes the page every time you do, so TONS of pageviews and if you throw adsense on you can make a killing with lots of people browsing.
