My dream for the past year is to start a tube site. I've picked out the script (Kernel Video Sharing) and may have found a good host for a dedicated server. I'm not new to web development, I've built dozens of Wordpress sites in the past and I know my way around cPanel.

However, I've mostly done frontend development on shared hosting. Getting a dedicated server and setting up a tube site is totally new to me. I also don't have very much backend development experience. After this, I hope that I'll be "promoted" to being a full stack developer.

I was wondering if I would be in over my head if I tried to set something up today?

To my understanding, KVS is willing to prepare the server for a fee and then deploy their script for free. After that is said and done, how much backend work would I need to do to get things running smooth?

I have no problem setting up and using an IDS and whatnot, but otherwise its all pretty new to me. I'm hoping this will be a learning experience, maybe even a profitable one at that.

If anyone could point me in the direction for my knowledge on the task at hand I would be very appreciative. Also, I realize that a tube site probably isn't going to be the most profitable venture in todays age, but thats ok. I don't mind breaking even, setting up the site itself and starting a community is my primary goal along with the knowledge and experience.

Following this thread as I'm on a similar journey. Good luck to you bud, I'm hoping to learn from you as well. Also planning on using KVS. I've set up a similar script in the past successfully but honestly I don't wanna give advice just because I don't think I can confidently tell you how to do it correctly this time around.

My friend is currently starting off on youtube as well. Hoping that someone can answer your questions as perhaps this information will help him as well.

Ok, so I'm going to go for it. I figure I can spare the capital and if it goes somewhere then woohoo! But if I botch it and lose, then oh well at least I tried and I'll have the experience. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, or whatever.

Anyways, I'm not very confident in my ability to skin the website. At least not at the moment, maybe I'll be fine. Not sure until I actually get my hands on it.

Would this be a good place to find someone that does KVS skins? I've been working on some mockups in PhotoShop, so I already know what I want.

Yeah I believe there are some talented people that can help you with that on here. I'd look in the web design threads.

Also what kind of hosting are you gonna be using? VPS or Dedicated? And are you planning on uploading content or recycling embed codes. Mass or hand picked?

I'm actually about to also start my journey here very soon, very similar to yours. I don't think I have as much knowledge as you have so I'm just trying to get some tips and prepare myself for the ride ahead. Definitely learned a lot from posts by another member on here @sexwork101
if u haven't seen his thread regarding tube sites, i recommend it.

I currently run a video and music sharing site for independent artists. After reading your initial post, I can assure you that you're on a great path. You got a solid plan and it appears you've got everything lined up properly. Investing in the advertising will be your biggest and most important cost when launching. Don't try to do any blackhat techniques. It won't go that far and you will probably end up penalizing yourself in alot of ways. Spend the money to get off the ground. Also, trying to monetize with a bunch of low quality Adsense ads or other CPA ads will turn off visitors since every tube site has these and they seriously become annoying to the point where users will just go look elsewhere.

Personally, I charge artists submission fees and other tier pricing to post and advertise on my site. To them it's worth the exposure and I've found you can make alot more getting a few sales per day as opposed to trying to "trick" visitors into clicking on ads. Not to mention the recurring payments you can get from satisfied customers/clients. This may go against everything you've read on here about Blackhat techniques and monetizing with ads but if you can create something that appears valuable to a certain demographic of people then your chances of monetizing for the short term and long term will be much more lucrative as opposed to running ads. And of course, you can do both but I've found the average viewer really appreciates the lack of ads and they tend to share and spend more time on the site this way. Just my humble opinion and experience with this business model.

Best of luck to you. I think you got a great chance at success with this.

    I appreciate the encouragement! :)

Ok, I'll give them a look. Likely dedicated hosting, I know I'll have at least a few hundred confirmed active users just at start (practically guaranteed), and if word spreads I hope that'll increase. Uploading content with the users able to upload content as well. Pretty much all handpicked because its an uncommon niche, user submissions will be vetted as well.

Good luck! We can do this!

That's not a bad idea, is there a specific sub for posting journey threads to?
