I'm trying to draw more traffic to my site and get some dedicated fans with a forum - I've never really messed around with a forum and I was looking for some pointers. Ideas to get users to join, security pointers for the forum etc.

    Some points:
I'm starting with phpbb because I'm not keen on jumping into vbulletin had never ran a forum before properly before.
My niche is DotA 2 - Defense of the Ancients 2
I'm pretty much looking to build the forum up for a year or so and then maybe flip it unless it's bringing in really big revenue.

Any ideas or pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Also, my SEO game is pretty on point so I'll probably be on the first page with kw "dota 2 forum" within a month. So, I know all about that.

Several years ago before I started seriously doing IM I played around with a couple of forums - and boy was it extremely difficult to retain and attract new members. I had reached over 2000 posts on my own personal forum but there were only 100, of those there were only 5-10 active members.
From my experience it's usually very difficult to establish a new forum especially if there's already an established forum on your topic. I'm guessing Dota 2 already has quite a few established forums, but it's worth a shot if your website already has some visitors.

You might consider getting forum posters to start it up. Also I already saw a few Dota 2 forums, so it will be hard for you IMO.

You should also contact some serious gamers, who will post their Strategies about DotA, you will need a lot of content there to take a visitors interest.
I would also advertise your forum over Youtube....contact game casters and ask them to place your link in the description or to read it at the beginning of casting.
I know 2 casters who made a forum, actually that was about Startcraft 2 , but in 1 week the forum had more than 20k users, and it was pretty active, so i believe Youtube is a great way to advertise in gaming.

And another way to catch the visitors, is organizing tournaments(with a little prize pool for start), people love to win money while they are playing games. :)

I hope this will help you.

Forums are spam magnets and consume a lot of time in management. I'd try something different if I were you.

I've been playing DOTA more than 9 years and still play it on daily basis. The truth I would like to tell you that this game is not good enough and you shouldn't waste time on that.

    Here are the reason.

Majority traffic is from Philippine, Pakistan and some other countries.
No body will try to buy the guides because there are some serious players replays available on the gosugamers.net and they wouldn't bother to move on other forums

It would be hard on trying to bank with that game if you are planing to go with the forum

If you are interested in a forum style then why not give a shot to diablo 3. A lot of players and this game will not end for sure and it will keep growing. Go for the Diablo 3 , A lot of traffic is from USA and you can bank well.

    Enough said!

I was starting to somewhat realize this a few months ago when I purchased the domain. DiabloIII would have been the better selection. I get a decent amount of traffic to the site and make a bit with adsense but I don't think the monitization isn't really there with DotA. I do have the Ownage Guide on the site but I've only sold 20 or so in the last 3 months. I was thinking maybe content locking "beta keys" or something to that nature... This definitely looks more and more like a site I flip to an enthusiast within the year.

A word to the wise forums are a highly competitive niche especially gaming forums and they require a ton of work. Of the 4 forum projects I've ran I've only had luck with one and the other 3 all made a loss and had to be shut down. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions

Its all upto you but I don't see any money from that game. One thing more It would be short term income.

Probably best advice you'll get: Don't.

For every game that exists there are 50 forums for it. Even more for games in general. You will not be successful unless you have something to make you better than the rest. Better, not different.

I guess now i'll try to get some members to the forum just to flip the whole site. The forum is just an extension of the site to add weight which was always my goal. I'm sure someone on Flippa will buy in a few months haha

Instead of flipping the site, maybe engineer a way to monetize it, my 2 cents.

I ran a few forums back in the day using phpbb. Some failed, some were great. The biggest problem, and the reason I had to cut some off too soon was the constant spam. It's endless sometimes.

If you are really serious about this, you need to find the forum with the best anti-spam capabilities. You may need to pay a little bit more for that.

What's really shitty is the fact that most of the spam originated right from users I talk to each day lol.

If you get the SEO downpacked for the right keywords, that seems like a good start. However, I'd imagine that hitting the top spot would be extremely difficult.

Some tips I can think off of the top of my head:

    - Attractive graphic designs
    - Build "hype"
    - Use of social networks to bring people in.
    - Keep the spam on the DL
    - Get people to post content.
    - Repeat for several months.

What's the end goal? Are you going to monetize the forum? Or just use it to increase traffic to your website?

Increase traffic and value of the site.. The forum is not the main focus just trying to make it decent enough to be a cool addition to the site.

That's what happened to me.. I started the forum maybe 2 months ago.. Got around 100 members and growing then I wake up one day and I have 5,000 comments on how to get a bigger, longer, stronger erection.. knowing shit about phpbb I tried to fix it installing all sorts of junk and then it just ruined everything.. I disbanded the whole forum and then realized how dumb that was. Forums really aren't for me but it would be a nice addition even if it only had 25 regular members I guess.
