Hey guys, so I have a fairly novice question to ask. I've searched through the forums for a-bit and couldn't find an answer, so I guess I'll go ahead and ask at the risk of being chased off.

Is there any difference in attempting to rank an website that's thrown together in HTML (Using a Basic photoshop layout) that has quality content on it, opposed to trying to rank lets say a Wordpress website with the same exact content on it? I'm curious about this. Lets say I have a domain called 'DomainName.com' and it's used for selling domains. Would it rank better if I created a website that looked appealing to me in photoshop(I know, looks have nothing to do with it) and stuffed all of the information in the <body> or would it rank better if I installed Wordpress and posted the contents inside of a post.

Which would rank better, but more importantly, why?

That's not exactly what I meant, but I understand where you are coming from.
I'm curious as to if the structure of Wordpress increases SEO in any way opposed to just a website with some images and text tossed in the <body> tags.

Wordpress is usually well strucured for SEO. You just need to take care of how fast you can make it load.

Wordpress has many plugins that make seo simple and can help improve search engine ranking.

Keep in mind Google's robots consume HTML, so the question is not if one is easier to rank, it's how perfect can you develop your HTML. If your programmer or whatever can make a perfect HTML page, you're fine. WordPress's 2011 and 2013 themes have pretty good HTML, but I just started using Elegant Themes and they pass the W3 Validator with 100% scores, so I'm not using anything else right now. Perfect HTML + a fast loading site will reduce how many backlinks you need to rank. Not dramatically, but you want to do everything you can to give Google what it wants.

Yeah the difference in ranking is really all in your ability (and I guess a little in what the website will be.) Laubster here gave a good answer but I just want to add a few things.

If it's just a simple local 5 page website, you don't really need wordpress. When you install wordpress it comes with a ton of files (sometimes referred to as bloat) and scripts etc. that if your making a simple site are just excessive and unnecessary. if you're creating a bigger site, then this extra functionality will probably actually get used and wordpress (as well as other CMS's) are spectacular for managing content efficiently.

If you are going to use wordpress, read up on doing proper SEO with it. Yoast SEO plugin is great, but you should also know what you need to do and why. for instance, every time you create a page in wordpress, you actually create 4 or 5 pages and yoast doesn't handle these duplicate pages until you tell it which one is important. This isn't a problem with static HTML (unless you specifically create the same page a bunch of times, which would be weird).
