The U.S. National Security Agency has the ability to snoop on nearly every communication sent from an Apple iPhone, according to leaked documents shared by security researcher Jacob Appelbaum and German news magazine Der Spiegel.
An NSA program called DROPOUTJEEP allows the agency to intercept SMS messages, access contact lists, locate a phone using cell tower data, and even activate the device?s microphone and camera.

According to leaked documents, the NSA claims a 100 percent success rate when it comes to implanting iOS devices with spyware. The documents suggest that the NSA needs physical access to a device to install the spyware?something the agency has achieved by rerouting shipments of devices purchased online?but a remote version of the exploit is also in the works.

    This is the US government.

You think they'd do it to their own people but no others?

If they are not already spying (illegally) on other countries that will be their next step.

I tried telling people that they have a way to shut down iphone camera's at any given time but sheeps did not want to believe it. It was on a BBC in 2012 I think.

/out before this turns into a political debate.

    it's govt not a blackmailer.

security is responsibility of govt and they have to do this thing.
not only iphones every communication you do through and means skype , fb , emails , any phone call can be tapped by govt.

they are not going to blackmail you , they will just check if there is anything wrong. (your call, email, message is going to be read by robots/computers . if they flagged it then a human will look into it)

Here's how they hack your iPhone:

"The documents suggest that the NSA needs physical access to a device to install the spyware..."

Pretty sure everyone here knows you can infect pretty much anything if you have personal control of the machine. That isn't really a revelation. If a 10 billion/year spy agency couldn't crack a phone after installing software on it BY HAND then it wouldn't be a spy agency for very long.

The best part of this whole debate is seeing the international community's nonplussed reaction to American indifference. Telephone metadata, primitive iPhone hacking, gmail cracking - snoozefest. Where's the smoking gun? This stuff doesn't even give me a semi.

True. However they can't install spyware in it, they can't access my contact list, they can't activate microphone and camera, they can't have full control over my phone, they can only tap it, nothing more.

That can install it all they want but I always do a full wipe 2 or 3 times after I buy a phone new or used

I also belive NASA front companies that own popular apps that have spyware embedded

Thanks Mr OP! I think this article gives the US government too much credit. The Chinese steal our tech/trade secrets at will. FED employees lose 1000 laptops a year and the government can't even make a website that works for $600 million so I have a hard time believing that they have the manpower let alone the desire to intercept Iphones and to hack them.

When the guys in white shirts and shades stop by and take me away after planting evidence, I'll try and post back...lol.

Off subject but I have always wondered if a company like Kaspersky(Russian) with 250 million users could just update their Anti-virus with spyware that reports back to Putin's KGB? Maybe they make the viruses too to keep business booming.

Yeah, the focus has been on the US because of Snowden, but we all know all countries do this and if they had the power of the NSA some would do much worse.
