We had previously implemented a strategy of paying for lots of links and focusing on 3 or 4 keywords as our anchors, which have since plummeted since Panda 3.3 and Penguin.

Yesterday I literally printed a 75 page document of all of our links according to Open Site Explorer. I have been going in and manually changing anchor text wherever I can, and taking down the very egregious links if possible. This has involved calling and emailing webmasters, digging up old accounts and passwords, and otherwise just trying to diversify our anchor text and remove bad links.

I've also gone into our site and edited some internal links (also too weighty on certain keywords) and removed other links entirely.

My rankings have gone DOWN more today. A lot. WTF does Google want?

is there something I'm doing wrong?

Should we be deleted links from all private networks entirely or just trying to vary the anchor text?

    Thanks

my ranks went down too from 7th place with 3kw, to over 100 :). All i did was to create web 2.0 with unique content, and i made this way 3k backlinks, mostly tumblr with anchor text variation, even so, penguin decided to bitch slap my website.

Maybe the flow of backlinks was too much, i have no clue yet, all my anchors were random, based on my long tail keywords mostly (over 500).

yeah it looks like the people ranking top 5 in my industry have far fewer links than we do.

OP, it just seems bigG looks at your changes as an admission of guilt.

Think of it like this: IF the links were natural, you wouldn't be able to go about changing them all, would you? Hence, changing them is like saying "I did it!"

Hmm... after all the recommendation about anchor text diversity, I guess there's something else here...

How did you do it exactly? I mean, your anchor text distribution?

Perhaps wait for a few days and see. Google can't possibly find all the links at the same time in one day.

Yeah but it's not as if Google isn't already onto us and already knows we screwed up. isn't us "admitting defeat and changing our mistakes" the only hope we have for our domain?

It's a dance. You have to wait two weeks or more for google to re-evaluate your links then rank you.

I thought our on-site stuff was pretty good but I don't even know anymore. I'm a little worried about how many internal links we have.

Is anyone willing to look over and it give me a review? I'll PM you the URL.

Yep you only changed things a day ago, give it at least 2 weeks to see any results - did you get any unnatural link warning in google webmaster tools ?

Well done on taking action tho, a lot of people have just ditched their URL and started again

Our domain is way too old / valuable to start over. We're a big company.

We got the unnatural linking warning back when they implemented Panda 3.3

Wait for some weeks and then again try to add new and original content in addition to building high PR links in a natural or WH way.

you should focus on building NEW quality links, which is very good sign in google's eyes. If i would notice modification of old links i would say WTF?

Open Site Explorer and most other link analysis tools have quite a large delay (i estimate up to 2 months delay). Google web master tools is the quickest to update from my experience but it is still quite slow. This means that even with the best will in the world, you will have missed a massive proportion of your links.

Every link cycle i do takes a couple of days from start to finish and the results show roughly 4 days after i finish the cycle so i think you are also drawing conclusions too early. Having said that, I think altering previous links is very timely and ineffective for the reasons mentioned above and you are better off building new links targeting different anchor text. Try to avoid exact match anchor text and start targeting LSI keywords that include your keyword.

One good PR7 link is so much more valuable than 5000 junk links.

Not gonna lie, I have no idea where to get a PR7 link other than from a paid private blog network entry - the very links that screwed us. Is that even possible?
