My question is this. Will spamming backlinks to a subdomain affect the main domain for a site?
2 months back we outsourced our Local SEO to an agency called Sumo Digital.
The idea was that they would generate hundreds of pages for us on a subdomain to protect against duplicate content.
A couple of months in they hadn't received any traffic. Then overnight our backlinks went from 198 to well over 12000.
We called him up for reassurance that this wouldn't completely destroy our DA and we were told not to worry. Because the backlinks are linking to a subdomain and not our main domain that it wouldn't be an issue.
Our Moz DA dropped from 30 down to 23in a few days after this anyway.
Any advice would be appreciated as we are not sure if we need to drop these guys.
